Fighter Escorting Passenger Plane over Berkshire?

I was coming south out of Hungerford earlier today, around five pm. and saw a swept wing fighter flying wing to wing with a commercial passenger jet heading east. They certainly weren't at cruising altitude and were lower than most planes coming into Heathrow. Anyone know anything about it?

I've been in an airliner being shadowed by a fighter jet. You could see it as clear as day, yet no one would say why it was there or even admit it was. Nothing in the news or on line

Sometimes I even wonder if I dreamt it all.

Yep, most likely a Fairford arrival, and the commercial jet would more likely have been a military air-tanker.
