New car for mum...

Looking for a new car for my mum, requirements as per below.

Must have: Hatchback, 5-door, low running costs, reliable, economical, parking camera, handsfree audio
Preferences: Automatic, car easy to get into (not too low)

£10k budget

So far I'm liking the look of the 2018 Nissan Leaf but want to ensure I'm not missing anything obvious. (Petrol hybrid or electric would be my preference for her!)

Open question to all... are the used Nissan Leafs too good to be true? The car seems perfect for her needs and ticks all the boxes for her pricepoint.

Have you thought of a Kona EV?

At that budget you’d be looking at the smaller battery versions, but it’s a very good EV platform. You’d probably get something around 2010-2011 too and still in Hyundai warranty.

Toyota Yaris are good and have a reversing camera as standard.

I owned one for a year, one of the earlier generation hybrids - they’re very reliable, being a lower powered Prius underneath.

Not too low sitting position, I always put the seat height up to maximum.

Yaris hybrid would be perfect.

The new Clio hybrid would be even better, but they seem to be holding their value very well. Not sure you can get one for £10k yet.

Nissan Leaf is a horrible driving experience.

The Nissan Juke is better and they come with everything you requested plus they are a bit higher for her to get in and out of.

E power models will do 60+ mpg

Another vote for the Ignis - the only car, ever, my MiL has not bhed and moaned about constantly.

BMW i3 - tends to be very popular with owners.

Left field choice, Hyundai Ioniq. Also tends to be quite popular with owners.

For those who just want a car to work and be reliable, durable and easy to maintain it's hard to look past a Toyota hybrid.

Very cleverly engineered to eliminate most of the traditional ICE maintenance/failure points, excellent build quality and a 10 year warranty.

My MIL's 2014 hybrid Yaris is yet to even need a replacement bulb.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and comments. We've decided to up our budget to £13-14k - thinking that the Yaris is the best option but they seem to sell the moment we enquire!

Appreciate the suggestion. Ran it by her but she's not really interested! Do they last? She wants to keep the car for 10-12 years if possible...

Unsure on what size car you want but I think Suzuki has all your needs covered. I think a 17 plate and onwards Swift should be in budget and is an excellent car, especially in SZ5 (top spec) trim. Alternatively if you want something smaller there's the Ignis, and if you want something bigger there's the Vitara. Just avoid the "AGS" gearbox; This is an automated manual, and this type of gearbox has been historically unreliable across many manufacturers. Maybe Suzuki's is ok, but you can also get a CVT option and possibly even a DCT which will both be much better.

Yaris hybrid is another option if you want a "traditional" hybrid as opposed to the "mild" hybrid offerings of Suzuki, and the Renault Zoe is what i'd opt for if I really wanted an EV.

Going by their original offerings I'd say they'll last just as long as their Japanese equivalent.
