Just seen him on TV doing an interview stating how he’s had life experiences that older MPs haven’t had (he’s talking like recent ones I guess?? Nursery, puberty, his first kiss?). Exactly what we need :-another naive MP who thinks he knows everything.

Couldn’t get it out of my head that he was Paul the alien….

Sam Carling MP

Paul the Alien.

I didn't hear the interview, but it hardly seems controversial that different generations have different experiences of growing up. Or that those differences provide a good reason for representation of all generations in Parliament.

Like everything it should be balanced, a young person's energy and enthusiasm and older persons life experience,
In an ideal world parliament would be filled with a good cross section of society of all ages instead of the wall to wall professional politicians we seem to be stuck with.

Good on him for getting involved and elected.

Caught the tail end of his interview this morning and thought he came across well.

Whether he does have an impact on younger people who knows, but good on him for giving it a go.

However, yes a little odd looking.

hehe

He graduated University last year, this year he's an MP. Can we guess where this is going..?

Frequently we complain about "career politicians" - people who spend their careers jumping around in politics, with very little real-world experience. This is my biggest concern with Sam Carling, he's come out of Cambridge and gone straight into politics, no doubt given his academic performance, will continue to do well and climb in politics - and good for him - but, at what price to the constituents?

His lack of real-world experience as an adult, outside the cloisters of Cambridge, personally sends alarm bells ringing for me.

Which part of Cambridge isn't the real world?

All of it. It's like some educational Narnia land isn't it?

The trouble with "life experience" is that much of it is experience of times gone by and unhelpful to discussions about now and the future.

Spent two years as a councillor in Cambridge and overturned a 26K Conservative majority.

That's not bad for 22.

Those who ignore the mistakes of the past are more likely to make them in the future.

The parts in bold would concern me too.

Years back we had an MP who had made his money running his own business so ran for Parliament to put something back into the local community. He had the experience of employing people, knew how to talk to people and certainly knew when someone was trying to bullst him.

By all accounts the words no one in the local council wanted to hear were 'The local MP is on the line and would like a word'

He's got more hair than Hague had when he addressed the tory party conference at the age of 5.

Good point. But if only we could get rid of those telling us how great it was in the old days.

He is a super bright chap with a great future ahead of him. Much better than one of the old time servers.

Having "life experience" doesn't stop politicians ignoring mistakes of the past though.

Why? it's not like he's been made Chancellor of Exchequer.

He's one MP among 650. He has a different life experience to those much older than him.

He's as new at being an MP as the other ~300-ish brand new MP's, so will learn as well as anyone else
