I think I know the answer to this but...

- Classic car (1970) that was originally a UK car
- Stayed in the UK until 2005 when it was exported to Italy
- Currently registered in Italy but still has a UK registration that when entered into the DVLA shows as SORN (But with an export marker)

So my question is, does this car need re-importing as any other EU based car would? So re-registering with the DVLA in full and the 5% vat paying?

I'm imagining the answer is yes of course it does.... but wondered if anyone had done similar and had any concrete information (I've Googled it and there's not much about this scenario, and yes I could ring the DVLA but that would be very painful indeed).

Can't answer your question, but you might also be liable for VAT as well, so check the process very carefully before going ahead.

Yes. I've imported a few DeLoreans over the years and it's the 5%. There's a specific form (I don't have to hand, unfortunately) but if you Google DeLorean import UK you'll find it.

I don't have recent experience but the SORN is meaningless if marked as exported.

Had it not been marked as exported, you'd have a chance of smuggling it back and retain the original number.

Over 30 years old is 5% VAT and 0% duty

Thanks for the clarification, there is a little more information here, but doesn't answer everything:

There are 2 completely separate issues at play. One is the tax, duties, VAT etc, and the other is the DVLA registration.

The registration bit is easy if it's originally a UK registered car. Provided you have evidence such as previous V5 it is dead simple.

The tax situation depends on your personal situation, e.g. if you are currently living overseas and returning permanently then certain duties won't apply. Google NOVA and have a look at the gov site info on the process. It's pretty clear and straightforward.

Thanks Oliver, that's actually very useful - I clearly could have found that myself too!
