Hi all,

I have recently been made redundant following a restructure for a high street bank. I have been a bank manager for many years and am currently in my 30s however I am after some inspiration on what to do next.

Clearly I have experience in banking, finance, management etc however without looking for the obvious jobs such as bank manager I am after a bit of inspiration on what do move in to next.

Thanks,

ChrisNic

I have some experience of this type of conundrum.

I was a branch/area manager for a high street bank and like you faced redundancy. I ended up staying in the organisation but took a completely different role.

I’m now a design operations manager working with a large team of user experience designers/researchers. Whilst I’m not suggesting that this should be your next role you should embrace the opportunity to do something new. You will have built up a wealth of valuable, transferable skills that can be applied to many different roles.

Don’t limit yourself to applying to jobs you have experience in but consider whether you have the right skills to do the job.

I doubt there will be many bank managers left in the coming years, so you need to look elsewhere. How about retail management? Running a big supermarket or similar.

What have you always fancied a go at outside of your current career? Opportunities like this might be just the incentive to take a more serious look at doing something else that you may really enjoy. Good luck and keep us posted!

How about finance for retail / automotive franchises or leasing?

Is there a gap in the market to attach finance and partner with some / all of the car auction sites that have sprung up in recent years? Maybe this has been done already?

It depends what you enjoy. I'm a former bank manager and made the move to something else because I knew my days were numbered. Sure enough, my old branch is gone. Personally I hated the people management side of the role so I moved into mortgage underwriting. It's quite refreshing just doing my own thing, no people to manage / train. Not customer facing, no sales targets and mostly work from home. It's not for everyone but it's the best job I've had, been doing it 5 years with no plans to change.

If you liked the challenge of operations and fancy a left-field suggestions you might consider Amazon. It's challenging but can be a lot of fun too and they hire from many different backgrounds.

In a not dissimilar situation I rang round my worst (ex) customers and suggested they needed a non-exec to set them on the straight and narrow. It proved very lucrative...

Depends on your experience and whether you enjoy dealing with businesses but maybe look at the invoice finance arena.

I left mainstream banking as a business bank manager and went into a business development role for invoice finance - I did pretty well out of for 20 years before I retired.
