Hello,

I'm hoping I can find someone here to give me some insight into the input of odometer readings for an MOT.

I'm looking at a car (that shall remain anonymous) which has some fluctuations in the mileage readings (hopefully you can see the image above). The owner tells me...

"Input error on MOT. KMS put in at one stage. Servicing and bills prove. HPI clear no mileage discrepancies"

How likely is this? And how easy to put my (and any future prospective buyer's) mind at rest?

For clarity, the readings are as follows...

2009 - 33,251
2010 - 68,518 (BIG JUMP)
2011 - 74,293
2012 - 50,026 (BIG DROP)
2013 - 85,286 (BIG JUMP)
2014 - 55,663 (BIG DROP)
2015 - 58,567..... and so on as normal from there.

The jumps do seem to be outliers, with the 50k figures looking in line with what you'd normally expect as a more progressive increase 🤔

Otherwise, the car seems great and I'd like to believe it.

Any help/input is greatly appreciated on this one.
Thanks in advance.

Yes it looks like if you convert those higher year km readings to miles, it sits more or less exactly where you'd expect.
I'm struggling to think how any attempt at fraud/clocking or other dodginess would result in what you now have - obviously cross reference with the history/owner change dates to be even more confident.

What model of car is it?

It might be and is most likely the case.

But...bear in mind, that should you ever sell the car on, you will have to explain this to buyers, who may be less likely to believe the reason than yourself.

The service records/ service book should clear that up no problems, perhaps try and get photos of them before buying.

Guessing the very limited miles in the last 10 years or so its something interesting, thus unlikely to have been used as a taxi at some point?

From my own car I have discovered that these MOT electronic histories are not always accurate. My own car has somehow managed to acquire an MOT fail from something else with a completely different mileage. I owned the car at the time this 'fail' is recorded- it is a mistake and the correct MOT is also recorded. The MOT history held by the DVLA is far from infallible.

I suspect in your case, it may be the garage which did the MOT have recorded the kilometers as miles.
