Hi all

My garden shed is falling apart. Every time I go out into the garden I seem to find another part of it in the floor!

It needs replacing, but I was after recommendations as to brands/sources as if like to put a good quality one up that should last a long time with the correct maintenance.

I use the shed only for storing the lawnmower etc so it's not anything special at all. Nothing fancy required.

Any thoughts would be useful.

Hopefully someone will be able to tell us how good or bad their plastic sheds are.

Tiger Sheds, Empire Sheds, they’re all the same in my experience. All made from minimal possible amounts of timber but having said that they’ll do a job and will last longer if you put them on a decent base, elevate it in chunky bearers, and throw a tin of Ducks Bsck at it.

To get significantly better quality (in terms of timber etc) you’ll need to built it yourself or have someone do it for you.

Depends on size really but get a joiner/chippie/carpenter to build one for you with proper timber structure, lots of bracing and good quality, thick cladding. Won’t be cheap but it’ll last forever if you look after it.

I had mine made for me by Brierley Hill Sheds and it's absolutely excellent.

I needed a custom size. Timber and labour prices have gone up a lot since I bought mine but I'd buy another in a heartbeat as it's rock solid and will last an incredibly very long time. It's construction is more like a higher end summer house, which they also make and supply.

Recently bought and built a plastic Keter shed. Very impressed with it, wouldn't go back to wood. Maintenance free, looks good.

Use a local company that designs and builds.

I was looking for an 18x8 shed about 10 years ago. I compared several places, and went with a local specialist that does everything from bin stores up to summer houses. Thicker framing, T&G roof and floor. It was a bit more expensive, but worth it. The only weak point was the roofing felt, which I had replaced with rubber a few months ago.

I've treated it with Creocote twice. No signs of rot anywhere.

If plastic, Keter.

If metal, Biohort.

Second this. We bought one a few years back, and we’re right on the waterfront. 10 year warranty, built extremely well, and manufactured in the U.K. too.

Beast sheds used to be the pistonheads favourite.

Thanks for the replies all.

I probably should have said that aesthetically, I'd like a timber shed as it is very visible from the house so I'd like it to look as nice as possible.

Who knows if that's possible!

Our shed came from https://www.malverngardenbuildings.co.uk/ and it’s is excellent - solidly built etc.

They are not cheap, however the insurance company were paying! It was to replace a hand built shed that had burnt down after the neighbours pond electrics caught fire and set everything else around alight. The insurance company didn’t want to build a shed, but I was happy with the quality of this shed. Even though they don’t advertise an adjustment service they do offer one. So on the standard range we had the door for an apex roofed shed is in the end. We wanted ours in the side as that’s what we had. However in standard format the side isn’t tall enough. They actually made out shed taller and put the door in the side.

18 years later sheds in great condition still although felt roof been replaced several times.

If you go and look at at a few sheds you’ll notice the difference between the cheap and expensive sheds. The timber frame for an expensive shed will be made from larger uprights, potentially 2 x2 rather than a lot smaller, the cladding will be thicker etc.

These guys: https://www.timberlux.org.uk

Ignore the slightly shonky website, the sheds are first rate.

I used Aardvark Joinery in Barnsley, I believe they do sheds nationally.

Anyway, I went with their security shed and it’s exactly what I was after - properly rock solid.
