Morning all, I am looking for a new (second hand) car that is ideally four wheel drive (but not essential) with a towing capacity of in the region of 2000kg. I had pretty much decided on a Skoda Yeti (having posted on here about Yeti 1.2 advice) but then also started looking at Tiguans. The budget is 10k and mileage ideally below 60k to get a few years out of the car. Rear load space is a must as I will occasionally use it for work (run my own tree surgery and grounds maintenance business) so the ability to load it with strimmers/chainsaws/towing an 8ft trailer with mowers on would be ideal. I have a Toyota Hilux for the main bit of the business but it is nice not to have to take the pick up everywhere. I am also going to need to do long motorway trips to deal with an aunt's affairs so comfort is a must. So, in a nutshell, the Yeti and Tiguan are top of the list. Is the auto box with the 2.0 diesel decent or fairly agricultural? I know the Yeti has a very good and well deserved following, the Tiguan is not desperately exciting but is there any other vehicle to consider?

I had Yetis - a 10 plate and a 13 plate, both CR170 AWD, and loved them.

I had a Tiguan as a loaner while my Golf Alltrack was being serviced.

The Tiguan was newer and plusher and so on, but I didn't like it as much as I liked the Yetis. It felt a lot taller and less chuckable.

I can't speak for the yeti directly but I had the CR170 in a Tiguan and an A4 and it's a cracking engine. Not agricultural in my view, id go as far as saying it was quite refined. The Tiguan was a 2008 with a huge spec (heated leather/pan roof/xenons) which made it a very nice place to be.

I couldn’t sing the praises of our Yeti highly enough, only replacing it when we needed more boot space to accommodate domestic holidays with two kids and associated luggage. The Yeti was great with the seats down and more than adequate for daily/weekly tasks even with the seats up, but it isn’t cavernous in there.

Worth taking a look at a CRV.

Pretty robust, very spacious and dare I say it probably way more reliable than VAG stuff (I'm currently in a Golf Alltrack).

Or if you want to stay VW a Passat Alltrack?

I came very close to buying a Yeti, great cars, but the boot wasn't big enough unfortunately. A Dacia Duster would be well worth a look, would fit your criteria well. I actually know a couple of foresters/arbs that use both passenger and van versions.

Many thanks for the insights there. I hadn't thought of the Honda CR-V I have to say, will look into those too.
I have been doing round in circles all day with this (and for days before if I am honest). I have even started looking at VW Touaregs as they really do tick the space and towing boxes very well. I have found a couple of these with about 70k on the clock, one is a 2012 and the other a 2014. What are these like in terms of reliability? I know they will be more expensive to run and maintain but will a 12 year old Touareg with 65k on the clock and a very good MOT history be a nightmare?

I believe the 2nd gen Touareg had a known issue where the air intake drain valves clog up leading to water saturating the air filter, which the engine then sucks through the filter as it draws in air. Also some possible timing chain issues - but these can affect anything. A lovely comfortable bus though.

For utility I quite like the Ssangyong Rexton. Merc running gear, good towing, can be had for decent money. The looks and refinement won't be anywhere near the VW though.

I had a 2012 Octavia vRS with the CR170 engine. Bought in 2013 & kept until 2019 & had then covered almost 80k miles. Not a single problem despite lots of short journeys in the last 3 years. Seemed quiet for a diesel & decent performance (at least by my standards) but not particularly economical. Less than 44mpg during my ownership.

What Subaru is it? A Forester by any chance? If so, that would fit the bill quite nicely.

We have had 2. Tiguans ,a 140 manual and DSG 170 both were great , we found the DSG a better drive due to smooth gear changes ,the 170 was great in France towing our caravan , able to cruise at 70+ on autoroutes,
When ULEZ started we tried getting a compliant one within our budget without success , started looking at a Kodiac ,and then saw a Karoq ,almost the same size as a tiguan, and that's what. We ended up with.

Out of interest, what's the Yeti like for towing that kind of weight?

It's a small car and a quick search suggests 1460kg, so if you're towing something that weighs 500kg more than the car wouldn't it be quite easy to get into a situation where the tail wags the dog?

We had a gen 1 facelift Tiguan R line 4x4 170 manual for for 11 years and 189000 miles.
Very reliable and a nice car to drive. Obviously pre adblue and not ulez compliant, hard to fault it.
My dad and brother had a series of 4x4 Yetis, both manual and dsg with no issues, now driving Karoq and Kodiak 4x4s, again both happy with them.

Fingers crossed it goes for you. I did give it some serious thought but really wanted a diesel one in the end. Good luck though.
