I want to travel around Ireland and NI.

Never really hired a car before but notice 24 a day for no waiver damage of 2k. I've found insurance online for 24 quid that will cover it. Do I Have to charge 2k to my credit card if I hire a car or is that if damaged ?

Be aware that you will have to pay an additional fee for going over the border with most hirers.

They usually put a hold on the amount rather than charge you - so you'll need to have at least £2k available on the card (and will have you credit limit reduced by that amount until released).

Can’t you drive your car over via the ferry?

Car is expensive on the ferry, foot passenger or cheap flight probably best bet.
I hired a Fiat 500 recently for £60ish for 4 days recently via Green Motion.

Yes even though you have insurance, you will still need a credit card for the money. I fell foul of that

Guessing you didn’t cross the border as that’s a further €69

It's cheaper on face on it to hire but stupid fees take my car. But that is still expensive so might just gets buses and trains.

There isn’t really a good joined up rail network in Ireland so worth doing some research.

For those with 3rd party insurance you will have to prove the coverage. This sounds obvious, but Belfast was the first place I had to provide proof.

Those coming from the US will not have come across it before.

They required a letter from my credit card company explicitly stating this rental was covered. Easy enough to do but I would prefer not to do it at the counter as I had to make phone calls. My original coverage provider was closed so I had to mess around with another.

If you’re not good at converting miles to km and vice versa then take a post-it with 30/40/50/60/70 etc to stick on the dash. Last time I was over (2018), a well known chain (think Jeremy Hunt standing on his doorstep holding up his red box) at Aldergrove gave me an “upgrade” to a 3 year old, Dublin registered, Insignia with no straight panels on it. The NCT disc on the windscreen also appeared to be expired but most annoyingly of all it had a km only speedometer and all my driving was in Northern Ireland.
Also, if driving in Belfast, use a satnav and look as far ahead as you can for lane changes. The motorways around the city make the M8 through Glasgow seem relaxing.

I used Waze for driving around and switched the units as I crossed the border. Made life easy.

I’m surprised about the comments on motorways. We didn’t have any issues in and around Belfast. I will admit I’m used to US highways where lanes appear and disappear at random and people change lanes like pinball bouncing around.

There’s no issues with the motorway unless you’re from Lincolnshire and don’t know what one is. Never seen it busy either.

We only have 4 motorways M1, M2, M3 and M5, no idea why we skipped the M4 and i'm not counting the M22. Where they converge at the Westlink interchange can be a bit challenging at rush hour but get 5 minutes away from it and the roads aren't busy and if you take a wrong lane there's going to be somewhere to reroute back the right direction within a couple of miles (broadway roundabout at the balls of the falls is a clusterfk)
