I've got a long weekend with teh girlfriend in Dublin, coming up.

What's worth doing? particularly if it isn't on the usual tourist list of things to do.

I'm not long back from a long weekend in Ireland.

The trains are fairly cheap, a trip south to Greystones was pretty cool, with a nice beach and decent eateries. The train journey was very picturesque, especially along the cliff top.

The Guinness tour is excellent and includes a pint of the black stuff.

We also did an open top bus tour, it takes a couple of hours to do a full loop, but was well worth it.

If all else fails, go to a pub. We walked through the Temple bar area, but avoided the pubs there as they are very much a tourist trap, although saying that we did have a few in the Brazen Head.

Enjoy!

Go and look at the walls of the main post office in O'Connell Street.

They still have bullets holes from The Easter rising in 1916.

Very touristy thing to do but the Jamesons Tour is very good. Lovely bar in it too.

See if there’s a GAA match on, hurling, camogie or football. Or just drink….. a lot…..

Thanks for all the recommendations, much appreciated.

Where's good to eat, and anywhere to avoid?

Avoid the north inner city. Especially at night. Just don't go near there.

Temple Bar is an overpriced tourist trap but generally OK during the day. At night usual precautions apply. Stick to well lit and busy streets.

Made it there a couple of weeks ago and we enjoyed it.

Stayed https://www.nicheliving.com/ in Rathmines, which worked well for us, though they were still putting the finishing touches to the building.

Had dinner here https://www.richmondrestaurant.ie/ one night, expensive but worth it, excellent food.

In Stiches is a good comedy club on the Southern edge of Temple Bar.

The leprechaun museum is a fun way to spend an hour.

If you don't pre-book the Guinness tour you won't get in.

Smokin Bones BBQ in Temple Bar is acceptable, Falafels nearby is better food, albeit with a middle eastern theme.

The open top bus tour is more fun when it's the driver doing the commentary and not just a tape telling you about the sites. I was bemused that in amongst the "trad Irish" songs played on the bus between sites was Eric Bogle's "Green Fields of France." A song written by a Scot who lives in Australia about WW1

Yes the open top bus is worth doing, thought the guiness tour ( they call it self guided tour)was rubbish as you just wander around a few pictures, some fake waterfall thing and looking at the sponsorship etc and a small taste, just the commercial tourist centre.
The Jameson tour is far better, better guides and an education, you actually taste some other brands of whiskey to compare and ends up in a bar with another or a cocktail.
We avoided the temple bar bit as it was pubs filled to bursting with pissed noisy people. We found a pub on the outside of it that was perfect, live music, seating, tens of whiskeys to drink.

Leave quickly.

The west coast of Ireland is beautiful, rent a car and spend your time out there.
