Hi 👋 how can you tell if your car has AppleCar play? I think it was standard from 2017. Is there a software update or any way to add Apple CarPlay to your car? Thanks

For the 981 it required removing the PCM, opening it up and adding a circuit board and associated ribbon cables. A DIY job for the brave. Presumably it’s the same with the 718. Undoubtedly warranty implications as well.
These guys offer an installation option as well.

If there is a USB socket in the cubby hole/armrest between the seats it has car play.

If not then it does not have car play.

Havre a look on the 718 forum as there is a remote software update available to add it.

My 16 plate 718 Boxster S did not have car play but my 66 plate did.

My understanding is the early 718 CarPlay was an extra. You can still buy it from Porchse and they will load your PCM for a considerable charge.

You can get it third party, done on site at a car-audio place or it can be undertaken remotely provided you have a Windows laptop (Mac not compatible) and the relevant connector lead and SD card you'll be advised to buy. Costs vary but expect £250 (it was cheaper when I looked until I realised mine already had it rolleyes ) so the OPC price may not be far off.

Be advised if a third party undertakes it they need to configure the 'Adaptation' so that, if you have OPC warranty Porsche won't discover it. Otherwise when they run a scan they will see the third party on the application and they can't update the firnware of the PCM without removing it first putting you back to square one. Mines third party installed by a previous owner as it came up on the PPI scan, but I was buying through the trade and have no intention of letting an OPC service the car it doesn't bother me.

To understand if you car has it, genuine/third party plug you phone via the USB in the centre arm rest and it should default to CarPlay. There is no inbuilt wireless option in the early cars.

As mentioned there's a guy in the USA who's a member on 718.com and offers the service over the air. He knows about coding it correctly via 'Adaptation' by all accounts.

Thank you for your replies! Yes my car hasn’t got CarPlay, no usb in armrest only glove box. And my car has 2 yr Porsche warranty, so not sure if it’s worth messing with? I may get quote off OPC first? Carnt seem to change song on steering wheel when using Spotify via Bluetooth, CarPlay is so easy to use…
