Second generation X1

Hi all,
We've had a succession of BMWs over the years, culminating with our current E91 325i touring - which we love dearly, having owned it for the past 14+ years.
However, at 20 years old next year, and with 140,000 miles covered - lots of niggly things are beginning to fail, and we're looking at perhaps changing it..
My wife (who uses the car more than me) also wants something that sits up a bit higher, so we've been looking at the X1.
Our budget is going to secure us an early one - probably 2016.
My only general concern (not having actually looked at one in the flesh) is that I've heard lots of stories about both the diesel and petrol engines - problems related to the timing chain or guides/tensioners - which is an "engine-out" job to fix. Just wondered if 2016/17 models, especially the 18d or 20d, are considered at risk from engine problems like this?
Any other advice on what to look for would be appreciated!

We had a first generation X1 which we replaced with an X3 .. massive step up really
When it came to replace our F31 320d we looked at the 2nd generation X1 and found it a bit uninspiring
We did then look at the Mini Countryman which is essentially the same car underneath and it won us over, better spec, nicer drive and it had character which the X1 seemed to lack
Anyway we bought the Mini and no regrets at all it’s a cracking car it really is

Great car, bigger interior that the X3 (due to transverse engine). Fab in snow!
Just bought another X1 2021 facelift 2.0i xLine xDrive. Great too.
It replaced a 2019 Macan S we briefly bought, stupidly. The X1 is a better car all round. Porsche more comfy, luxury, handling.
Make SURE you get X1 Sports seats, not standard ones!!!!

Thanks all - we've seen a 2016 XLine with the Technology Plus pack (I think its called) which has the bigger navigation screen, with heads-up display (not sure what else it adds). Also has the pan-roof, leather sports seats, adaptive dampers etc. Anything to worry about with that sort of spec? It's only the 18d - but 0-60 in 9 seconds is quick enough for us these days, with the bonus of cheaper insurance and tax.

You can still put a comprehensive BMW extended warranty on any BMW up to ten years/100k miles. Just go online and set it up. There's a 30 day exclusion period to sift out known issues. Might give you some peace of mind.DJMC said:

Was it an expensive part, or did it require a lot of work to diagnose/fit?Our diesel sensor leak sent diesel into every orifice, ECU, even the wiring loom, hence the expense of replacing all those.
Built in Germany, re-built in Leicester!
