Nothing, a cold is a virus, you catch it from other people, wearing a vest or keeping warm etc is a load of old wives tales type flannel. I have a cold at the moment, I know exactly how I got it, I caught it from the guy in the video store on Wednesday evening who had a rotten cold, I tried my best to avoid any contact with him, but it bloody well got me. I also had a cold in the 2st week of August just in time for my holiday, I caught it from a customer who had a rotten lousy cold whom I quoted on the previous Friday. Luckily I have only had two colds this year, but whenever I get one, I always know from whom and why I got it, it pisses me off that infected people still interact with others and spread it about.

Sure, if you are fit and have lots of vitamin C you may be more immune, but basically the only way to avoid a cold is to stay away from people. The reason there are more of them about in winter is because folks stay indoors breathing each others germs and touching each other in a virus ridden environment.

Vitamin C and Zinc capsules help your immune systems fight colds. Wrapping up warm, wearing vests, thermals and mittons will help although you wont look or feel cool. If, however, you are staying in and away from human contact, then you'll have no issue looking like an eskimo
In wintertime, a bad habit is showering in the morning and then finding yourself outside 10 minutes later going to work. Not good....

Aye, Vit C will help even after you get a cold or flu but there are things to do to help. Coughs and sneezes will spread those diseases but most of the time they're spread by hand. Avoid public transport if you can, not just cos folk will cough and sneeze all over you and every surface will be covered with nasal mucus, but also because it;s just unpleasant compared to your car Think about it - someone coughs or sneezes into their hand to be polite, or into a sodden hankie, then the hand goes on a grab rail or pole in the bus or tube train. There's still a key step in the chain to avoid the worst risk, and that's don't bite your nails, pick your nose, or rub your eyes. The infectious muck may be all over your fingers but make sure it stays there, if you touch any mucus membrane it's feeding time at the microbe zoo. Good luck and wear a clean vest, from Aunty TB.

Get a job outside, like on a building site. I'v had one cold in the last, well, I don't know how many years. Perhaps it's the beer though.

Vits C, A and E and Selenium supplement does it for me. (Lots of C)

There's an old boy down the local who never seems to be ill, when we asked him his secret he said:

"Drink beer - make no plans"

I used to be quite susceptible to colds & man flu & it got worse when I started working abroad and flying twice a week. It may be psychological but dosing up on Vit C & Zinc has really helped reduce these.

I used to get a lot of colds, then I started driving into work instead of using the train and I haven't had a sniffle for 2 years. Basically, stay away from strangers

Drink a glass of red wine every day. I haven't had a cold in years, and I put it all down to that.

Keep a positive attitude, feeling depressed reduces the effectiveness of the immune system. Another reason why colds happen in winter.

Just done a load more training on this!

Wrapping up warm will do nothing!
Most colds are caught from the air, only thing to do to avoid that is to avoid closed spaces with lots of people.
Can also be picked up from surfaces so washing your hands regularly also helps.

As people have said, vit C, zinc and echinacea are all very good at helping boost the immune system. A generally healthy lifestyle will also achieve the same sort of effect. Plenty of fresh meat and vegetables along with some excercise. Also lots of water or green tea!

There's probably some more I've forgotten but my book's downstairs!

Roll your own, don't pass 'em round.

If you think you're coming down with something, don't drink.

Lois here by the way....

Remembered the other preventative measures. Lots of rest and sleep and trying to reduce any stress.

The whole thing is just about ensuring your body is healthy so can cope with it better.

Too bloody late.....

I got the shivers, shakes, hot-cold flushes, stomping headache, backache, sore throat from hell and an ear infection......

Had it for three days now and not getting better. Off to doc's tomorrow, but its a nasty one! So, if you have miracle cures then please lets 'ave 'em now....

Seriously though - if this is the sample of what is going round then I strongly suggest you avoid at all costs this year! Its a nasty little bugger and so far has knocked me for six / twelve / twenty-four!!!

Avoid....

All vits as mentioned above and exercise generally works for me as long as your remember to warm down before you leave and go out in the cold.

...and if you have that horrible feeling of an evening that you're about to come down with something, excess of snot, itchy throat, etc., go to war!

A full 1000 mg dose of paracetomol and a damned strong hot toddy - I use whisky but vodka/rum are options - a very hefty slug into a mug, juice of half a lemon, 2 teaspoonsful of honey, the rest boiling water, and find refuge in the welcome arms of morpheus. Damn you'll sleep well!

Personally, as I mentioned above, I'd leave the booze out of that recipe. I always used to find that if I felt an incipient cold and then had a drink, I'd have a full blown bastard of a cold in the morning.

Believe or not they say garlic is a good way to keep the flu away. Yeah I know, makes your breath stink, but you dont have to eat it every day
