I have issues with paypal, in that I can never seem to access it to register, think its my old steam powered PC & dial up not reacting quickly enough to paypals secuity or something, but either way when I try & set it up it throws a wobbler.

So anyway it does leave me a bit stuffed for e-bay sales other than cash on pick up, or for postal items they post a cheque & wait ages for me to have time to bank & then wait again for it to clear.

So bank transfer seems the best idea, but is it dodgy security wise to let a stanger have my bank details? can they do anything with then at all other than pay money in?

Cheers

Nope, they can't do squat other than pay you money.

You only need give your account number and sort code for someone to transfer money into your account. These are available for all to see on any cheque you issue so no more dodgy than issuing a cheque.

Indeed. Every cheque you issue has your account name, account number and sort code on it, which is the only information you need to give out in order for someone to do a BACS transfer to you (eg. via internet banking).

But this is an ebay transaction, the guy will be giving out his address also.

Account info is fine.. Account info plus address isnt.

There should be one way account numbers given out by the banks, this would solve the problem.

But isn't that just the same as sending a cheque with your name and address for the goods to be dispatched to ?

I never give out my real address on eBay anyway. I use a mail bureau service (kind of like a PO Box only, only unlike the Royail Mail they are not legally obliged to give out my real address to anyone who asks). However, your point is well made as not everyone can justify renting an 'address' with a mail bureau.
