I was having a conversation with a mate who works in a military base and his phonecalls get tapped, he says you can hear a pop-hiss-click when they do it (This is proven fact). The other day I was on my phone and the phone did it a few times. I was really curious and checked for a dodgy lead, what made me think it was deliberate was that the sounds were identical. I can't think of why anyone would want to tap my phone but it made me curious.

Anyone got any ideas about this paranoia inspring subject?

I suspect that if the authorities really wanted you not to know then there would be no pop-hiss-click or whatever

I reckon that most phone calls are screened for certain phrases anyway, shouldn't be too hard with the available technology should it?

Don't worry, your conversation wasn't that interesting.

EDITED because I had clearly forgotten hot to spell.

The pop-hiss-click is old school.

All tapping is done digitally at the exchange.

Phone tap evidence is till not admissable in a UK Court of Law.

I think roughly 2000 warrants are issued each year for phone taps.

You won't hear anything if your phone is being tapped or if there's a tape recorder on the line. However, if a tape recorder switches in because of voice activation I'm sure there will be a voltage change which could be measured.

Piece of piss to ensure there isn't. And in any case...

Pop-hiss-click probably means they want you to know it's being tapped.

Doesn't stop it being useful for intelligence though.

What makes you think they cant see what you are saying on the internet?

Maybe it’s time to make some dodgy phone calls saying things like “Tiv is whacked, can you come round and help move the thing?” or “Boss, I just want you to know that the work I did for you the other day is finished and went off without a hitch. I doubt that nasty piece will be giving you any more hassle”.

Phone taps inadmissable for UK courts, but not in Europe, e.g. Holland, recent news on Radio 4 about this debate currently going on in the UK.

The pop that used to be heard, came from when a crocodile clip was placed on the wire.

This was easily cure by the wire tap operator licking his finger, placing it on teh bare wire and rubbing the clip down his finger then cliping it to the wire.

It is all done digitally now at the exchanges.
