ND2 gearbox oil and service schedule

Hi My ND2 had its fifth service at a main dealer (69 plate, 27k miles). I still use them as they’ve been good at getting warranty repair work sorted and also have managed not to damage the car in their care. The 5th service according to the on-line Mazda manual suggests the gearbox oil is changed. This hasn’t been done (nor did they say they would change it). As any main dealer would usually try and charge for anything vaguely required I’m assuming the on-line manual may not be entirely accurate. I’m interested as of course the gearbox is one of the weak areas. Has anyone had a 5th service at a main dealer and was the gearbox included/does anyone know if this is a requirement/suggestion etc.

Assuming its a manual?
My guess is they will say its filled for life as most do, you can only really get your answer by speaking to them really.
Maybe do some research and get it done elsewhere with a quality lubricant from someone like Redline who are known for top notch transmission fluids.

Hi Thanks for the reply - yes manual. The dealer says 10 years. Mazda's on-line user guide says 5 years. The internet says 5 years. The car/gearbox is fine with the usual clunky shift in freezing conditions until warm. My only concern is that the gearbox is an ND weakness (according to various owner sites) so it'd be great to get a clear cut answer. I'll probably just change it but it's odd that there is no clear answer and that the Mazda dealer and Mazda's documentation contradict each other.

Nothing to do with the schedule but I have a 2016 ND 2.0 Sport Recaro and had the gearbox and diff oil changed on last years service, 2023, so at 7 years, just because I believe changing lubrication fluids early beats leaving and ending up with damage due to not doing so. It only added about £100 to the service at Mazda so let them do it rather than doing it myself.

If you can get the car on a ramp, I’d carry out the gearbox and diff service yourself. You’ll need a 24 & 23mm socket (6 point preferably) and a medium length breaker bar for ease of drain and fill plug removal. New plug crush washers x4. Torque wrench for refitting, the transmission drain and fill plugs are both 24mm, torque setting 40-59 Nm
The differential, however, has a 23mm fill plug and a 24mm drain plug, torque setting - 40-53 Nm
I would refill the diff with “Mazda Long Life Hypoid Gear Oil SG” (0.6L fill) and the gearbox with RED LINE - MT90 75W-90 GL4 Synthetic Manual Gear Oil (2.0L fill, which is superb)
That way you know it’s carried out correctly with the correct lubricants, as I believe most of the negative threads concerning the gearbox is due to incorrect oil spec fitment…….
