Ignition components
Discussion
Being curious & wanting to evaluate various components i did buy the premium distributor cap, rotor arm & HT leads.
I do carry a spare set just in case, all working fine before being replaced.
After 15700 miles i had a miss fire. This was arching between the rotor arm & distributor cap.
The HT leads all read between 3.8 & 5.39 ohms or Gnomes.
The cheap leads read between 6.50 & 14.42.
In that time i did not clean the stepper motor or throttle butterfly.
I was amazed at the amount of muck. These will be added to a pre MOT yearly clean.
The premium set cost £118.79 the cheap Land Rover set now costs £44, which will last how long or just change every 5000 miles.
So its up to you to decide, its all depends on mileage etc. But the car ran better on the premium set & thats still cheaper than some HT leads.
So i know what route i will be taking.
The other ECU & coil pack boys wont have this problem but thats another expense.

Sadly like everything the quality goes down but the cost goes up.
Leads are quite easy to sort, id buy all the stuff from Mr Retro on ebay and just make my own, you can have spares to hand then if one fails and you dont have to fork out on a full set again.
Length can be adjusted to suit to help keep away from the manifolds and if the angled plug ends are used it also helps.
As for the cap and rotor the distributor doctor used to be well regarded but will pull your pants down price wise, im not sure what the quality is like from the Tvr parts suppliers.
Out of interest what parts did you buy?

Same as you. Retro leads & distributor doctor. DD has the rotor arm made so i dont mind paying for that. His distributor cap is off the shelf Italian i think.
Its hard to avoid Chinese crap even Lucas & Bosch are made in China. The market is awash with replica & pattern parts.
I avoid Fleabay, you can get parts posted from China for peanuts, just dont try sending them back. Yeah UK seller ??
At least with Amazon you can return crap parts. But i stick to UK sellers Spark Plugs Ltd etc.
I have a from new 1998 VFR800, after 26 years the front brake light switch failed at the MOT station. I said it was checked before i set off.
The original was marked Japan, the Chinese version was £3 so we know that wont last very long.
Just think with our 6 Volt electrics on our motorbikes we called Joe Lucas the Prince of Darkness.
