Carried on from another thread, where I seemed to get a negative reaction to a comment i made about the UK. Thought id start a new thread.

The idea of going away in the UK depresses me so I always aim to go abroad. Other than bits of Cornwall (which is a 5-6 hour drive) and hardly warrants a full week, it's all pretty much meh (IMO).

Overpriced hotels, crap weather, nothing really interesting to see or do All very depressing. I like the Cotswolds but not really a holiday place. Horses for courses and all that but I'd rather stay at home then waste money in the UK.

Been all over India, China, Cambodia, etc so like doing more then generally sitting around a pool. Just think the UK is one big expensive, depressing dump and I work to get away from the UK as much as possible (it's still my home though so no plans of leaving). But if I'm stuck in 1 place for a week then at least you want is nice weather, good food, good hotels, nice beaches (none of which can be found here). Cant even go in the sea in the UK as it's filthy...for the life of me cant understand why anyone would choose to holiday in the UK, except those with young kids or the elderly.

Is it just me and few others who think this way?

Some people don't like flying or are scared of flying. And others just enjoy the uk.

We tend to always holiday in the UK. Main reasons are the cost to go abroad in school holidays, we've got a dog which I won't leave in kennels so comes with us and again, mainly cost of going abroad.

I mean it's relatively pristine compared to those.

I enjoy the ease of packing! Do I need this book, this pair of shoes, this coat? Doesn't matter bung them all in.

Depends what you were doing in India, China, and Cambodia that was so great, to be able to answer your question.

Otherwise you're just saying that going somewhere you don't know is more interesting than where you do.

I live in the US but visit the UK once a year or twice a year. We do see family and wouldn’t return so often if they were not there. But, we would visit even with our family or my own ties.

We just spent a week I. Ireland where we don’t have family.

Oddly, one thing that appeals is the weather. I hate hot weather so we actively avoid hot places.

The UK has some beautiful places that are not weather dependent.

It all depends on what you want out of a holiday.

Holidays are very subjective - some people like to sit on a beach, but others like to go walking, hiking, sightseeing, do sports, etc - all of which the UK is a great place to do those things.

I used to always be anti-UK for holidays but then spent time in places like Cornwall, Dorset, Hampshire, Wales, The Isle of Wight and Devon and so therefore appreciated some of what this country has to offer.

Would I choose my fortnightly 'main' holiday as the UK? No
Would I frequent a Butlins or a Haven Holiday Park? Hell no

But that doesn't mean the UK is a write off.

Clearly, you haven't travelled around the UK very much. I enjoy all the various islands - Scotland, IOM etc plus Lake District, Cotswolds, Derbyshire etc.
I also travel around most of Europe, India, NZ, Oz etc - they are all so different and each have numerous attractions.

We holiday in the UK, normally 2 or 3 nights in one place, then the same again, so normally 4 nights or so away.

Reasonable hotels, just poddle around, visit a few places, few sherbs, meals in a restaurant or the hotel, that kind of thing.

But we also generally have 2 one week holidays abroad as well during a given year.

I.e a bit of both.

Not everyone needs to boast " Been all over India, China, Cambodia" blah. blah, blah
You sound like one of the charcters out of the film, In betweeners 2 who has to tell everyone where he's been.

All of this was said on the original thread, the post you're replying to is almost a copy-paste of what was on there too, so it's a bit odd that it merits another thread some weeks later.

We have dogs, so take them on holiday with us.

We keep returning back to the Norfolk Broads each time as we love the slow pace and ability to see/interact with nature and do nice walks with the dogs.

I appreciate going there every year might be a bit 'samey' (and I don't need a map any more, just a tide table) but it's the one place in the world we'd go to, given the choice and somewhere I'd seriously considering retiring to along with a boat.

Typing this whilst at Butlins Bognor ( shock horror! )

Weather crap! But its a 2hr drive and not horrifically priced for a half term break. Kids are 8 and 10 and love the shows, soft play on tap, indoor heated swimming. So not all bad.

I do get the venturing abroad for the weather, but then it can be too hot, so for us usually a winter sun brake or two, as in went Lanzarote in feb and the weather was spit on.

But now summers on it was, ill be going to the good old isle of wight in August, rain or shine the kids will love it.

I'll try and squeeze in a Balearic island trip late October, if I can find something at the right price with good flight times.... If not might go back to Butlins.

As for furtger afield, I just can't be arsed with long haul flights ( it about time someone invesnted faster aircraft like they had in the 70s! )

Perhaps the OP might like to ask the millions of visitors from overseas why they visit Britain for their holidays rather than staying in their own countries or visiting anywhere that’s not Britain. It’d also be interesting to know exactly how much of Britain and abroad the OP’s visited to be able to give us such well thought out view on holidaying in Britain compared to the rest of the world.

Exactly, and a quick look at the posters previous travel destinations,

Delhi, Agra and jaipur being hellholes
Croatia not in a rush to go back
Krakow just like any touristy place
San Francisco is an utter dump
LA is bad

He did like the Algarve though!

Only thing that worries my is the weather, otherwise it can be great.

We’re off to Devon to a rented cottage right on the lake front (and I mean right on as in the garden stops and the lake begins). Beautiful cottage in a wee village and a pub about 60 seconds walk away.

I intend to absolutely nothing except relax and visit the pub when the mood takes me.

I can’t bleedin’ wait! Just hope the weather is decent.

I love travelling abroad but it’s just a slog nowadays. Even if you go down to the usual suspects of Spain or Portugal, you lose a whole day travelling. How the flip can a three hour flight take a whole sodding day? Sometimes it’s great just to throw your bags in the car and head off knowing that’s all it will be - a car ride.
