Wondering which vehicle history checker people are using that's reliable. There are so many out there and clearly some will be a lot more accurate than others.

Others may comment but I’ve used vcheck in the past and it’s been accurate with good info on the car. I’ve not had any issues flagged up mind you, so can’t personally vouch for its efficacy in picking up salvage etc.

What I would say is that most of the guarantees I’ve seen with these checks only guarantee that they, themselves, have collected the data and passed it on correctly. As far as I can understand, all the check sites generally collect the data from the same sources. So, if those sources are incorrect, eg the insurance write of database had a delayed update, they don’t pay out.

I use totalcarcheck - which only yesterday put me off a "well looked after" Mini Cooper S that I was thinking of buying when it showed me that the car had spent some time as a guest of the good people at Copart, including a link to the Copart auction photos of the car in many many pieces.

Car Vertical seems to sponsor everyone and their dogs at the minute. Loads of YouTube channels are offering 20% off. I think SR20 is one of the numerous offer codes.

Just a wee heads up for anyone looking to get a car check done,

If you purchase a single vehicle check from Car-Checking.com they will automatically set you up on a monthly subscription.

What should be a single fee of £5.95 becomes £39.90 per month.

I thankfully found out in time and had my bank cancel the direct debit the company had set up without my consent.

By the looks of their Trust Pilot reviews hundreds have been caught out by this.

(I had googled Vcar check and selected the first link sponsored by google. Turns out it wasn't Vcar but this mob instead. My mistake)

Avoid car vertical. That company seems to ruin every single social media creator’s content with their paid ads, which means it deserves to fail.

I used V Check for my last purchase. It picked up a mileage discrepancy due to an error from service advisors/MOT testers but I was satisfied everything was ok with the car. No issues with V Check.

Car Vertical seem to be the equivalent of Squarespace which are all over YouTube as well. Every YouTuber recommends them and says what great value but when you look into you’re a bit shocked at the price

I got stung by this - I tried to email the company for a refund and they (obviously) refused and stated that it does mention this in the T&Cs. Vile company who have probably made thousands off people having no idea about it.

I use Car Vertical now. Yes I know people hate the ads and to be honest its annoying how you have to buy 2-3 checks to get any kind of value for money. However, its the only check I can find that gives me the full VIN without hiding part of it. If there's an alternative that does this I'd love to hear about it.

vinwiki gives you the vin from the reg. Don't give car vertical your cash for this, as it's free to get

If you want a free check for stolen/cat s, etc just go onto Autotrader and create an advert using the registration number. It will tell you if it’s been recorded as stolen/ loss.

No need to pay for an advert, just cancel after you see the results.

Vcheck works for me and is worth every penny.
Helped me avoid a write off a few months back when I was a little too trusting of the seller but decided the day before to do the check.

If you need the full VIN number, put the reg into the Chipex site. The VIN will be in the URL.

I just got caught by this.

I did exactly the same as you - wanted V Check, and the first link says V Check - so I clicked on it and used it (on Sunday), thinking it was V Check.

Got a text from the credit card company this morning (Nationwide - credit to them) saying that they suspected an illegal transaction of £39.90. Called them - and it was car-checking.com who'd decided I should have a monthly subscription. What an absolute scam.

Nationwide have refused payment and card is now blocked. And now - since I don't trust a bunch of scammers - I have paid for a proper V Check report (fortunately, I'm not paying / collecting the car until Thursday)

I'm astonished that this scam is still allowed to continue.

Yep, so am I.

It's not so much the outrageous charge (who would ever choose to pay £40 a month!) - but the fact that they intentionally appear as other companies in Google search really shouldn't be allowed. It's intentional fraud even if it doesn't qualify as that legally
