I've just see a forum in general gassing about the amount TVR owners who only post about their problems and never about good aspects to owning their cars.

So, I've had my S over a year now, and can honestly say, without touching any wooden objects or crossing of fingers that my S has been the most reliable car I have ever owned!!!!!
Only running costs so far has been regular oil changes, filters, lots of fuel and very soon (thanks to snetterton) tyres.

I think there is a different expectation - the S types are less of an outlay and so perhaps a stoic acceptance if things do go wrong. If you shelled out 40 grand you might not be quite so stoic.

My S has been no less reliable than any other car I have owned, and a lot more reliable than some. I have twice had to use the S (used occasionally) to jump-start the year-old Saab (which is in use every day) and never the other way around, so that tells you something I suppose.

I think you have said it all really , drive the thing and keep it oiled and fettled !

The S series, IMHO gives the best value performance motoring available !

My S was superb value over the time I owned it. The comments about expectations are spot on. The odd bit of gaffer tape or putting up with some things not working was just acceptable to me given the hard time I gave it and the miles I put on it.

70,000 miles and just one low loader (and problem fixed in 5 minutes by dealer who knew more than the AA!)

Yep, my S was much more reliable than any other car I've owned including the Griff. Never a low loader, one blown coil and a split hose. Better than ,y parent's Polo and my mini.

i have had 3 breakdowns in 3 years

1 faulty battery when i collected from dealers

2 faulty fuel pump this had seized up after a restoration project

3 total loss of power this was due to cables being burnt out after they fell on the exhaust again not secured properly after restoration project ,

My S2 was impeccably reliable for the 40k miles I had it, never let me down and no nasty surprises at any of the services. The V8S cost slightly more to service and run and put up with several seasons of track days and sprints in standard form without any problems. Reliability and running costs both took a bit of a hit when I started modifying it, as you'd expect. Even so it does very well for a highly modified 150k mile twelve year old car...

Edited to add: ... that gets used extremely hard on track as well as pootling to work during the week.

Yep...Chuffed to bits with mine.
Only car so used daily whatever the weather.
Starts first time every time and though it has now clocked up nearly 113,000 miles, the engine, chassis and mechanicals are in better order than many with less than half that milage.
One TP problem in 3 years of ownership and that was quickly sorted once I knew what to change.

I love my S, but you do need to keep on top of things and give them more tlc than your average Vauxhall or other street box.But then,it is 16 years old!

The purpose of this site is largely to enable us to help oneanother,so naturally there are lots of problems posted.Comforting to know your chums on PH are there to help and advise though!

I have only had one dodgy fuel pump relay in two years, not seen a low loader yet.

I hate answering these just in case its tempting fate.

I have had the S for 12+ years now and its been completely reliable. Its my daily transport whatever the weather. Did have it off the road for a few months over a year ago but that was for chassis work not because it let me down.

Reliability is good..... sure there is the odd niggle if a component fails but you have got to expect it on cars that are this age.....

I haven't had my car out since last Monday..... turned the key to take it out today and it started first time.... as it always does....

Mine has been marvellous. Apart from a burst radiator, but that isn't the cars fault is it, it was the radiator.

Had mine 2 1/2 years now, still smile when I turn the key. Daily runner, 2 breakdowns - 1 throttle cable (TADTS) and once when the immobiliser packed in, keep them serviced and on top of the little niggles and they are bulletproof.

Put about 30K on my S3C as a daily driver and in general had no more problems than any other car which I'd have owned for the same amount of time and put the same miles on.

What I would say is that it did take longer to get sorted on a couple of occaisons that it needed things doing to it, (bodywork was the real killer here), but general mechanical maintenance etc was not a significant issue..

OH dear!!. Am I the odd one out... Had my last S1 from 6 months old to over 150,000 miles. Yes I was the butt of jokes for many years with all kinds of breakdowns, Girl friends prefered my Landrover if we really had to get somewhere on time. The AA knew me by my christian name, in fact one year I was given notice by the AA. Trouble was I was a fix it when its bust man. My current replacement S1 with 100,000 miles, which was owned from new by my engineer friend, is a different kettle of fish... tight, dry, reliable. Reason.....garaged, love, with regular and preventative maintainance (or is it that after so many breakdowns on my old car that I know a lot of the little tricks to keep her going) like zip tying in the fuel pump relay etc etc

At least you never have to worry about chassis rust!!!
