Went through Eurostar today at Ashford with 1kg salt in my luggage. Scanned the first bag with computer and notes through and spent ages looking at it. Second bag with the salt went through without a question.

Surely they should of taken a look? Plenty of non-organic explosives about.

Perhaps it was the 4 gallons of vinegar & three tons of chips that threw them off the scent!

..but why would you take 1kg of salt on a train?

Unless there were wires to a battery/pcb and a lump that looked like a detonater then they're not too fussed. Considering you could make a bomb out of an old copy of the Radio Times and a bicycle pump then you must say they're really looking for a sphere with 'BOMB' painted in white on the side and a hissing fuse out the top.

You'd be surprised what the latest x-ray systems can do. Once they've been 'taught' organic/ non-organic/ metallic/ plastic/ ceramic etc etc they cycle through modes. They can even store the image and process it later, allowing, say, a suspect to pass through while arrangements are made to 'have a word' somewhere quiet.
On-line systems can even superimpose contraband on the image to see whether the operator spots it. If not, it's P45 time.
The new airport scanners use two radiation sources aimed to cross each other. From this the computer can build a 3D image that can be 'picked-up' and moved around on-screen, so for example that cluster of wires and batteries can be seen to be above the copy of Razzle, but under three pairs of CK's and the kilo of hash
Meanwhile, don't waste your time with a Glock, it's a bit like a Stealth bomber. When you know what you're looking for, there it is

Why do the US airports insist that I remove my laptop from the bag so it can be X-rayed seperately?

I thought the whole point of the magic of X-rays was that they can see through my bag.

Oh yes. Airport security.

I may have mentioned that I work alongside airport security and see what they get up to. Consider that the person who is safeguarding your health is paid £6.30/hr. Monkeys/peanuts etc.

Two of the latest amusements.........

Yesterday 'tangoman', one of our 'favourite' operators,(avid user of fake tan) was caught using his mobile phone less that 20hrs after signing a memo to the effect that so to do would be a disciplinary offence. Sent home.

'carpet muncher' was caught two weeks ago SMSing her latest femme by a DfT oppo sending through a 'bomb'. The wonder machine spotted it. Half the departure hall spotted it. A big hand came out of the X ray with 'bomb' on it and pointed at the bag. But 'munchie' didn't spot it. All lovingly caught on CCTV.

As the documentary pointed out - if security is run by arse scratching baboons then expect a monkey house.

I have ginger hair, am a professional footballer and live in Mossley.

Say. No. More.

I been stopped for an offensive shoehorn at Waterloo before . I must admit that after the 7/7 incident the security getting on Eurostar was tight but it's all gone now. There's an extra passport control for exiting but you can walk where you want again.

Nothing is as scary as having your bags through a scanner and having 2 men suddenly points guns at you and take you to a seperate room whilst a third carries your luggage. Apparently a nice alarm clock (styled like the old pocket watches but much heavier in a leather pouch) and a big wodge of photos look like bomb making materials.

It was worse when neither of us could understand each others language! Scared? I was bricking it. But then I got fast tracked through customs etc as my bags had been searched anyway so not all bad.

I've got a really nice cigar lighter that happens to have an integral or fold out cigar cutter. This thing has got a blade about 30mm across and is razor sharp, to remove it you simply undo 2 little screws. Now I've taken this thing through probably 20-30 different airports now and never once has it been picked up even though I take it out my pocket every time and put it through the xray, the closest being once at Stansted when she picked it up opened the lighter bit, lit it and asked a supervisor if "burner lighters" were ok, he simplt nodded and she gave it back.

nasty wound on foot needing to clean with saturated salt solution for a couple of days. Can't be arsed to go and find a shop in Paris.

Anyway, even if it didn't have wires poking out of it surely a ikg lump of "salt" would warrant a look. I'm sure there are plenty of inorganic explosive that look the same under x-ray. Makes a mockery of the security searches I've been subjected to in the USA - quizzed on the white powder at the bottom of my toiletry bag.

Absolutely no lighters in the US. Well that's not true - Zippo, the US lighter manufacturer has obtained an exclusion to the rule so long as you use the special "lighter box" to pack it on your checked luggage:
