What a Turkey!

Just *awful*. Even Slartibartfast's "My name is not important." line - utterly wasted.

We got it out on DVD. Wait for it on "Sack-o-shite" television - or even better yet - just don't bother.

Its been a long time since I've seen something so bad. The wife went to sleep. I struggled to the end so I could say I'd seen it.

Just made me want to see the TV serial again...I'm not so purist that I'd want to go back to the radioplays but...poor old Douglas must be spinning like a top down there...

Blimey, is it that bad, since you've seen the original for comparison.
Was in two minds in 'lacklustre video' the other day to get it as well, perhaps that £4 saved

I thought it was pretty well done, and compared a lot to the original. How would you have liked them to change it?

Wel, it was pretty much the same as the series! You can hardly expect them to change it. The original series was an aquired tatse remember!

we watched the DVD last friday.
Were watching the original series this friday.
The film was utter bollox.
All the best lines were missing, Ford was a pointless character, and the guy playing Zaphod decided to base his interpretation on Betelguese.

Don't bother with it.

Ah, I was waiting until some more opinions came in on this before I took the plunge and rented it. I was a massive fan of the original show and the advert for it, complete with what seemed to be a Propellerheads style soundtrack had my alarms ringing.

10 foot barge-pole? No, not interested mate.

Thanks Don.

Absolute rubbish, best bits were Stephen Fry's narration......the rest, well sorry it just didn't work.

Agreed. Total tat. Thing that put me off was Zee instead of Zed for co-ordinates (its british FFS). and the wimpy pathetic voice of Deep Thought.
Also a lot of the things that is talked about Bablefish, life universe etc, Deep Thought, Paranoid Android, and the towel just seemed to be skimmed over. IMO the 80's TV series is a zillion times better. But I did watch it first so it will have given me a pointer and expection to lookup to.
Still get the DVD and then look at TV one read the book and listen to the radio play and see what you think.
Yet another carrier for the actors I think.

The problem it has it that many of the best jokes you have already heard before, either in the book or in the TV series.

Also many things, such as the narration work better in the book.

I thought it was average.

I watched it on Saturday (wifee bought DVD) and thought it was brilliant. I'm glad they kept the original (remixed naturally) music, and Stephen Fry does a good job of sounding like the original book ...

I thought it was good. They crammed what was about 6 hours into an hour and a half, so you can't expect everything... Remakes are never as good, but they did a decent job, without it being a complete hollywood stlye rehash

What annoyed me was them going to the trouble of filming the "Mostly harmless" sequence and then cutting it from the final film. And thet's the problem - they threw out all the one-liners and small scenes that make HitchHiker's so good. With everything else that they threw away I'm amazed that they kept the sperm whale sequence in.

The TV series is infinitely superior. It has better acting, better scripts and better animation for the Guide entries.

The film is just a massive missed opportunity.

I'm a massive Hitchhikers fan .. book, radio, tv, back to book again .. can't get enough.

I thought the film was great .. captured the spirit of the original whilst treading the commercial line without falling on the wrong side.

The mice are the real stars of course ...

I have the DVd here, but haven't watched it yet. Well, tell a lie, I had a quick look at the beginning to see if it had THE music, no joy. Then had a look at the end, again, no original music.

An earlier poster said they had kept the original music (remixed) - can anyone tell me where it is?
