Rolex service costs
Discussion
Hi,
I have a Rolex GMT Ceramic that’s due a service.
My wife has offered to pay for it for by birthday but I’ve no idea on the cost and want to soften the blow for her as I don’t think she realises how expensive it will be.
I’m only interested in an official Rolex service and I think it’ll also need a new sapphire as it has the smallest of chips on it and I guess they’ll insist on replacement.
Any ideas on likely costs are very welcome.
Thanks.

I had an early GMT with the Perspex crystal. Put it into local dealer for service as he used to do them in house, no longer has to go back to Rolex . Advised by them that it needed a new case, bracelet and crankshaft despite having had that replaced before. Retired so seldom wore it and had to set and wind it up every time, tedious.
Told them to do the work without the case and bracelet, it would not have been the watch I saved hard for.
Returned think cost was £500, but not a good timekeeper so complained “ah you did not do all that we recommended”
Sale of watch, had a two week cruise in the med off the sale.
Bought a digital watch which met my needs, battery lasts five years and when I put it on the time is accurate. Cost me €12 in local Spanish market, well pleased and do not miss the Rolex at all.

I had experience with servicing my submariner recently that would make me think twice about doing it again. I have owned the watch since new and worn it daily for 10 years. I have had no problems but after wearing it for so long I thought, surely it must be due a service.
I took it to my local AD who was happy to send it to the service center in Florida for $1000 (I'm a Brit in Ohio). Watch came back two months later looking all shiny. At first I was happy enough but after a while I noticed it would stop occasionally and need wound. This rarely would happen in the previous 10 years so something was clearly up. I would say it was stopping at least twice a week, almost like the self winding mechanism was not working correctly.
I went back to the AD who didn't question it and sent it back to the service center who would repair under warranty from the first service.
Another two months pass and I get the watch back again. No explanation of what they did or what was wrong. This was a few months ago and it seems fine since.
So in the end it worked out ok but I was without the watch for almost 4 months in total. In retrospect I wonder if it would have been better just to leave it alone and have it repaired if a problem ever came up in the future.

2 years ago I had a 2007 GMT serviced directly at St James Square
£600 for “complete overhaul” plus light polish / refinish as requested

Bazza is this your business? Or just familiar with them?https://ajwsl.co.uk/servicing/

My GMT Coke has started gaining 3-4 minutes in one go. Can't work out how that could be happening (losing minutes maybe, but how is it gaining them?!). Anyway, guess a service is in order.

Website is for a limited company but there is no address on there (legal requirement).
Looking at companies house the registered address is Leeds although the telephone number is Birmingham. That is likely to be the accountant but I would suggest putting your Birmingham address on the website as well.
Accounts show 1 employee, ie the director but user name is bazza. short for Barry. Could be a nickname but unless i was local and could visit your bricks and mortar shop I'd probably pass.

And if it is your place, and bearing in mind you are looking after items worth several thousand pounds some feedback:

I made the decision to take mine to Rolex itself in St. James’s Square for the same reason. It was serviced for £800 including VAT & 2 year guarantee.Website is for a limited company but there is no address on there (legal requirement).

Would you get a Rolls Royce serviced at a local general garage?

Hi Sir, it is not my business but I work there. If it hasn't been serviced for the last 7 years then its due for one anyway, if you're in the Birmingham area you could pop in and see our facility. Around 80% of our work is Rolex as everything from vintage bubble backs to Daytona's we also work on Roger Dubuis & Patek Philippe.
We include full photos of the movement stripped down and timing results if requested and of course a water resistance print out with your service.
And also any parts replaced, we would return with your watch.
We also offer polishing if you need it

Possible founder left uni four years ago, worked for eight months and started own business judging by the linkedin profile:
That's not to say they can't be a good watchmaker and do a good job, but website makes no mention of brand accreditations which limits the breadth of work they'll be able to do.

Different people will see value in different things, and I’m sure there are people getting older Rolls Royces serviced in general garages up and down the country! Would you get a Rolls Royce serviced at a local general garage?

My stepfather is a Rolex Accredited repairer with his premises set up to Rolex standards. The investment required in their equipment over standard machinery is immense, but comes with worldwide backing from Rolex.
His price structure is the same as Rolex UK, but he gets the flexibility of not having to refinish cases etc if not desired and watches don’t need to sit with them in the queue, they’re dropped off when he’s ready to start it.
Considering how infrequently a watch actually needs servicing, I don’t personally see why someone would use an unauthorised repairer, but plenty will!

Hi Bazza,
I’ve just looked on the website, and it suggests a basic service for a 116520 would be approximately £450. Is this correct, and do you have access to replacement parts as required? I thought Rolex had stopped supplying parts for the 4130 movement.
Yep thats the correct price Tony, that would include, new mainspring, gaskets and pressure test print out.I’ve just looked on the website, and it suggests a basic service for a 116520 would be approximately £450. We would strip the watch down and inspect it, and if any other parts parts need replacing because due to damaged
or have simply worn out there would be an extra charge.
But you'd be contacted first, and the parts would be returned with the watch.
We have a big stock of original Rolex parts all in there sealed packets including crystals but we also offer generic parts at a lesser price so you have a choice.
If you in the area call for appointment and you well see just how many Rolex's models we have as its 80% of what we do Sir
On are website under servicing there is a very short video of a Daytona being serviced you may find interesting
