Had the same experience as you with a phone for the wife. Graded at the top and arrived looking like it'd been in a washing machine with a load of gravel.They took it back no questions asked though.
Would highly highly recommend against using them.
Bought a £1500 MacBook Pro, wouldn’t turn on within 12 months. Seller did a repair. A few months later same fault again, but now just out of 12 month warranty. Backmarket refused to do anything about it and refused to give me the seller’s contact details despite this requirement being in the sale contract. They are not based in the UK so good luck suing them or getting anything sorted. Would never use them again.
In your case I would send it back immediately under distance selling regs. Only a matter of time before it goes wrong if it’s been battered like that.

received an identical spec items from a refurb guy from ebay, this time it really is in excellent condition, and it was over £100 cheaper. I saw the photos of the item before purchasing, rather than just have to trust a grading with no photos. Makes Backmarket seem a bit pointless really.

Over the years I've bought several phones and a MacBook Pro from Backmarket.
Had an issue with an IPhone I purchased just over a year ago when the battery swelled up pushing the screen out.
Quick email to them, result was one quickly repaired phone with absolutely zero quibble.
Guarantee did what it said on the box!

hole, then backmarket isn't guaranteed to take your side... not without a ton of hassle anyway. If there is even a chance of having this happen then i'd never use the platform.
