Could someone please explain to me why this is all kicking off again? I can't see the point with it, and as of yet, i have found nothing to suggest why it has all happened. I know the orange-men were on a march, but I've no idea if that was what sparked it all.
Its fecking embarassing. Bombs, Gunshots, and firebombs all used for what reason??

Its Northern Ireland

The Loyalists are pissed at the withdrawl of british troops from teh region, also at the re-routeing of orange order marches away from Cathlolic areas.

And it seemed a good excuse to steal cash points, cars and generally piss people off.

I really don't have any support for these sodding orange men. The very fact they want to march through catholic areas banging drums illustrates they are wanting to piss people off.

In fact depending on your creed it is either Ulster or Ireland.

Always amazed why the IRA never took their Bombs to Holland as the it was William of Orange who ut the prodies into Ireland anyhow.

Personally if Isreal had to hand Gaza to the Arabs then maybe Northern Ireland should be given back to Irish.

Execpt the Republic doesn't want them....

In the words of my best mate (catholic from Falls road), "Belfast is just one big council estate - with the same number of brain cells"

Been there with work and socially, never been so intimidated by an environment before.

And you think the UK Government isn't desperate to do just that? They'd LOVE to!

For a start the region is highly uneconomic to run - costing far more than any other region in the UK in terms of government services (like the cops etc). Then it has significant economic problems anyway - I'd be interested to know if it even raises enough cash to pay for itself! Maybe...

Then there's the troubles. Difficult and costly to deal with (not just money - *lives*).

If Tony could just hand it over and say "its *your* problem, Bert, here you go!" I'd bet he'd be delighted.

But its not that simple. The people of NI are citizens of the UK and, despite a significant minority of troublemakers, they deserve the protection and governance of the System they pay taxes for just the same as the rest of us.

All through my childhood, when watching the news, it seemed that someone was killed or bombs killing dozens was going on everyday, so much so that I became 'immune' to listening to and watching it, I thought that mantle had passed to Iraq, same news, different area,,,, then last night, its both Iraq and NI!!!
Wow,, we've really made progress in the past 30 years!!! NOT!

Spent approximately 2 and a half years in Belfast in uniform being part of scenes that we saw on the news yesterday. It is pretty frightening, but in my view as long as you have marches through 'opposing' areas you will not stop the violence.

As far as Belfast being one big council estate, yes, there are very bad areas (which I know well) but there are also very good areas with lovely people that are as sick of the violence and disruptive behaviour.

It's a big shame, as Northern Ireland is a great place.

It's not Ireland, it's NORTHERN Ireland. And it's not Ulster either (despite what the Northern Ireland Unionists might sometimes claim). Ulster is one of the ancient provinces of Ireland (the others being Leinster, Munster and Connaught).

Ulster is made up of nine counties, only six of which are in Northern Ireland (Antrim, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry, Armagh). The other three counties are actually in the Irish Republic (Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal).

The old Irish provinces date back well over 1,000 years whereas the current national split between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic only dates back to 1921.

Sorry, it DOES make a difference. This type of behaviour is pretty much unique to Northern Ireland and is not ever seen south of the Border.

Up to about 1921, Orange Order marches were also held in parts of what is now the Republic. Indeed, one of my ancestors was a member of the Orange Order in County Wexford. However, after the split Orange Marches faded out in the new Free State. Nowadays, the Protestant Churches and congregations get on very well with their Catholic neighbours in the Republic with none of this triumphalist nonsense ythat we still see in Northern Ireland. It's about time they woke up and left the 19th Century behind up north.

It didn't look like Orange Men to me on the news. Sure, they had a stand off with the but the majority just looked like a mob of lawless teenagers going ape.

Poor reporting IMHO.

Chief Constable is directly blaming the leadership of the Orange Order for stoking this one up. When the Parades Commission ordered them to stick to a particular route, the Orange Order called on their supporters to rally round ... given recent history, that means hold a big protest which will descend into a pitched battle. In the worders of plod it was "predictable and inevitable".

Exactly! These are just the 'chavs' of Northern Ireland doing what they do best

As a NI citizen myself, I find myself once again amongst the vast majority of decent people here, made to look like idiots to the rest of the world.
