Looks like I now need to get a Tracker for insurance purposes on a new car (managed to not have one on any previous M cars)

can anyone recommend any - want to spend the least possible and not have to have some fob or such and also not invalidate Warranty.

AVOID look for an insurance comp that does not want one, they are all but useless and can be disabled in minutes.

Whilst I agree with JM that they are pointless.

Trackstar S5 is the BMW approved solution and what we have on the F90.

Can be fitted by any BMW dealer.

Do you have to carry a separate card thing with the BMW version?

Fobs that go on your keyring.

So if you have the option to use the car with keyless - IE a phone that is paired you cannot with the Tracker unless you have the fob with you?

sorry should have asked that!

Ah, right. You can request service mode on the app for up to 24 hours to stop it pinging.

Otherwise if you drive off without the fob then it's gonna send an alert.

But the alert is only going to mean you receive a call asking if all is OK with your car, so you can say yes. Or leave the fob in the car, which makes a mockery of the tracker I suppose.

Though, I'm not aware of any insurance terms in mine that say the fob must be kept seperate/not in the car.

I had one recently as part of the same requirement, can go for a basic scorpion, around 200 then a years subscription, the subscriptions are nearly as expensive as the trackers so depending on how long you plan to keep the car just find one with a reasonable subscription cost, some do reduced rate for multiple years up front.

Trackers can be removed and refitted to your new car too. I used infiniti tracking and went with the S5 & driver tag options: https://www.infinititracking.co.uk/

I asked if a Halfords one fitted by me was good enough. No, it had to be an approved system with 24 hour monitoring and fitted by an approved supplier.

I asked the insurance company to recommend one. They said that they couldn't recommend one, but they supplied me with their list of approved suppliers.

Ha, no. But I am not sure how it makes a difference in practice.

If your key has gone and your fob is on it, you will notice because you have no car. And if they steal it without the key or fob, you will notice for the same reason.

Bearing in mind there is a live tracking app with geofencing alerts (regardless of whether the fob is near the car or not).

I never had an insurance policy that tells you the fob/card and key must be kept seperate, just that it cannot be kept in the car.

I have two cars with these things on. The only one with the card/fob has an immobilliser as well.

I don't think a tracker has a card / fob.
