Now I'm worried :(
Discussion
Got my new credit card today. I'm not a new customer, Just getting a replacement card as my old one expired. I have a direct debit set up to clear the balance every month and I’ve never been late with a payment. So, today I asked the credit card company if it would be possible to up my credit limit by £100. Their reply shocked me… they said that they couldn’t do it because I’d missed a loan payment to another company a few months ago and they advised me to try again in a month or so. The problem is I DON’T HAVE ANY LOANS ! I’ve never taken out a loan in my life and now I have no idea what the heck to do. My credit rating is obviously screwed because of this. I’ve been online to Equifax to try and get a print out of my credit history, to find that my credit card (the balance of which I cleared last week) isn’t being accepted. :furious:
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, people. :yikes:

Pay for the Equifax report using a different card...?
I find it surprising that a credit card co have told you why they declined your request, most unusual.
Having never experienced it before, I can only go by what the woman said. Words to the effect of 'An unpaid loan payment from a few months ago...' If this in itself is unusual, I should probably go back to Barclaycard and ask again.

Well, just tried experian credit rating online and duly signed up to get the ‘Instant Online Credit report’ Went through all the questions etc etc, paid with another credit card that was accepted this time
waited for my result to appear on the screen in front of me …. Only to get the message ‘Thank you, we will post your pass word out to you within 3 working days so you can access your rating’ So much for the ‘Instant’ online report. Yeah I know they have to be careful and make sure you are who you say you are, but it is a little misleading.
Ah well... nothing I can do for now ... time to go crack open a bottle of something highly intoxicating and go watch 'Taxi'

It is highly unusual for a bank to discuss the contents of your credit report.
It is but I have had one bank discuss my credit file in GREAT detail over the phone with me
I didnt complain as I wanted to know why the f
k I kept failing credit checks even though I had my file in front of me and it was fine
Wierd but ti does happen (not sure about the legalities of it tho...)
Would the loan have to be in your name or could it be someone living in the same house (spouse?). Or even someone who used to live there (if you've just recently moved). I presume that no money is missing from your bank account so either the bank has entered someone else's information incorrectly or the debt relates to someone else at the same address.
Just a thought.
Just a thought.

I can't understand why they would have even performed a credit score let alone a full credit check, just to increase your limit. Normally they would just look at the conduct of your account.
I'm getting more and more concerned about the conduct of the woman I spoke to at Barclaycard.
I've only had the credit card for 12 months, I haven't missed a payment (it's impossible as I have a direct debit set up to clear the balance monthly) and usually, my bill is never any more than £100 quid a month any way.
Can I just ask ... are you involved in the financial industry? And if you are, does this woman's behaviour sound out of order to you?

I dunno about that! When I got a cheque from my mothers late estate I had a very basic account at Natwest but they would still not upgrade the account even when I presented them with a large amount... computer says no forget about the human element.
Ah yes, I rememmember it well. My dozt tart of an ex--wife was well and truly in the financial poo, alas her credit rating affected mine when we spilt up and I ahad to 'disassociate' myself from her wiht Experian, eQuifax et al.
Considering she earned fou grand a year more than me, uoput less into our joint account than me AND ket taking the blody account overrdrwan, yet ran crappy old cars while I had the gas-guzzling TVR, AND had feck-all to show for all the expense except a bad attitude, peramanent periods, headaches and a bad attitude, I never did work out where the hell ll the wonga went.
Obllocks to credit, I say: if you can't affrod it, don;t buy it!
Sorry for driveliing and typos, been on the Guiiness with port chasers

Ded rite, old hcap....burerggs up yer tpying slliks as well.....
Our, (wifes & me) credit cards are rarely used, I usually use them for holidays, fuel and such, and pay them either "immediately" or within 2 months of my return.
Our "Halifax" visa card was recently dropped from "thousands" to £500 quid.
It transpired that my wife had for the second time paid into an "internet" limited account of (£500) instead of the main account of several thousandS......and thereby missed the payment date.
i.e. The company recieved the money, but into the wrong account!...
Explaining this over the phone eventually resolved the situation as regards the debt, which was returned as "credit" onto the card. BUT!!! Our card was reduced to a £500 limit!...(because of our bad payment record!!!) WTF????........
I have just (months later) spent the +credit returned to my card because of the misunderstanding, WHAT do you suppose is going to be my NEXT course of action?.....
Yes! that's right!...Fech Off!!!.............
It seems to me that these people WANT people who remain "in debt" and want rid of those that pay it quickly!.......or am I wrong?

I applied for an increase on my limit a few weeks ago via my CC company's website facility. It came back declined "blah blah blah, use of account blah"
thought I, I've always been really good with the account. As I didn't really need the limit increase I just ignored it.
2 days later the CC company wrote me a lovely letter along the lines of "Due to the fact that you are using your account so well, we'd like to offer you a limit increase to [more than I had tried to increase it online)]"
I wrote back to them and 2 days later my limit had increased, no explanation on the e-limit increase question though...
My point to all of this? Maybe it's worth checking as sometimes mistakes can happen, and somethimes it appears that one arm doesn't know what t'other is doing!
