Hello Hive Mind -

I have a new to me M340i bought as an approved used car 2½ years old and 40,000 miles. I accelerated hard the other day and the car instantly reported coolant and electrical problems, switched into limp mode, and recommended stopping and getting assistance asap.

When I looked under the bonnet there was a lot of coolant spray around the reservoir. When BMW stripped it they found the pulley on the water pump had disintegrated, another idler had lost its plastic outer and the belt wasn’t in the best shape.

It’s all been fixed and pressure tested. Although these B58 engines are supposed to be good two questions come up… any ideas why this might have happened and are there consequential effects I should be asking about?

I don’t really want to reject the car but I’m feeling like I couldn’t have done something to cause this in 9 days / 400 miles meaning it’s likely to be a pre-existing fault and, more to the point, I don’t want to be stuck with a lemon.

Personally I'd reject it just in case. Unless it's a rare spec or colour combination, that is - in which case, extend the warranty when the time comes.

Are there any grounds for rejecting the car?

Obviously it's not ideal having a problem like that after owning it for only nine days, but if the dealer's fixed it and everything's now working as it should I'm not sure how you'd make a case for rejecting it.

I'm reading it as the OP bought the car as an approved used BMW 2.5 years ago, so it's well outside the rejection window now. If it's under warranty then let them fix it and crack on. Keep renewing the warranty as the B58 oil filter issue might rear its ugly head, in which case you'll be glad of it.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

The car is 2.5 years old. It was new to me, my 9th day of ownership and a smidge over 400 miles when the failure happened.

Consumer regs permit the rejection of a vehicle for a pre-existing fault. I am grateful for the repair and that might well be sufficient if there are no likely consequential issues caused by the failure. That’s why I am asking about cause and effect rather than process and law.

I'd not reject it for that alone but I'd be doing a lot of Italian tune ups while the warranty period and especially the next week or so (within the 30 days just in case) to test it out fully.

Might just be one of those things and you have been unlucky. But if it’s a nagging issue in the back of your mind reject it and buy another unless it’s got a spec that’s hard to come by ?

If you do reject it , it would be good if you posted the reg number on here, so no one else on here buys it !!
