Some of the posters on this thread might remember the four years of dross under Ferguson before we won the FA cup in 1990-and very nearly fked that up aswell
Last year we won the league cup, we were in the FA cup final, got a champions league place, Europa league semi final as well ffs-and don’t forget we had to play two extra games against Barcelona and we were definitely the better team against them in both games!
All these games has really taken it out of us. I don’t think we did aswell as we did last season by fluke-
Not one regular on this thread stated they didn’t want ETH as manager at the time-in fact everyone was delighted.

Tuchel will be linked because he is leaving Bayern in the summer. Not a fan of Simoene, and Potter would struggle as well. The guy at Sporting could be interesting but would he not be the same as ETH managing a team in a lesser league that dominates the ball. The prem is a huge step up from other leagues in Europe.

DeZerbi could be a shout but even he is struggling now at Brighton.

So much negativity and entitlement on here by some posters.

Comparing ETH to SAF, or even thinking that football today is anything like it was in the late 80s is a waste of time. If ETH turns it round then it won’t be down to history repeating itself. It would probably be a bigger miracle. In the 80s United were one of two clubs that were seen as the top dogs. Other teams were thereabouts, but only us and Liverpool were seen as the big players. Arsenal & Everton had won titles, Spurs come close, but we were still the big team.

Is that true today?

Not sure I can face watching the match.

I’m also not sure Ferguson spent £400mn or inherited a squad that had regularly come 2nd or 3rd in the league.

We also took the odd beating through his time, but only one in the early days 5-1 vs City at Maine Road. The rest were after we’d started winning titles again, so were annoying, but accepted. We’ve taken some absolute pastings and still only managed 2 draws in all of ETH’s matches away at our supposed rivals. I can’t see that improving today.

Bet365 have us at 10-1 to win. That’s scary that United are so far off the pace that we are effectively as much no-hopers as Luton when we go there.

He was interviewed after every title! Never lived it down.

Some folk love a moan and clearly enjoy driving the negative narrative. I’ll be having a few pints and will have a few mates round for the game. Dreading the result but you just never know…we’ve no striker, no left sided defenders, a midfield that’s past it and ETH is a fraud. But I fancy a tight 2-1 for United.

Did anyone else catch the TalkSport discussion this morning on Rashford?

It was pretty interesting and, in summary, Custis and Winter were saying (off the back of Rashford’s interview) that Rooney and Beckham faced far worse criticism/press intrusion than Rashford has, yet they both consistently delivered on the pitch and always let their football do the talking, which Rashford is seemingly incapable of doing (aside from his purple patch last season).

I do appreciate that social media has evolved and given players a direct platform to air their unhappiness, but I don’t remember Wazza and Becks ever using factors outside the game as an excuse for poor performance or a lack of motivation, quite the opposite could be argued.

Ultimately it was a different mentality back then, which is what’s sorely missing now.

They aren’t going to win the title. I’m more concerned that the FA Cup remains the only realistic option to stop City doing yet another treble. The CL quality is rock bottom, they’ll win the PL.

I'm just hoping for a fair game. No refereeing / VAR whoopsies, a result that can only be down to the teams on the pitch and the tactics of the managers. No more injuries, no stupid penalties that aren't like at OT, just a game. If we get battered, like a lot are fearing, well it was expected (and the people wanting ETH out & the media can feast). If we get something, anything, like the unexpected 0-0 we got at Anfield, it's a result. I'll be hoping for the latter, but recognise the odds are very much against today.

It's sad to have to feel like that going in, but it's reflective of where the two teams are relatively in terms of available personnel. If we can show some fight across the team, some desire and some pride then I'll take that. It shouldn't have to be a request, but here we are.

I don’t necessarily want ETH out. What I do want is to see something from him that gives me confidence for the future. He isn’t providing that currently. A 0-0 draw or even a win today is only one match. A drubbing would be yet another one to add to the list though and I can’t see how he could survive that.
