Would appreciate some advice on my 1 series BMW 2020.

The passenger car door stopped opening all of a sudden. Both indoor and outdoor handle pull out and seems to unlock the latch but the door remains shut. It then magically started working again about a week later but now again has failed.

Having done some research i wonder whether it is the car door/lock release cable that may have come loose? Does this sound likely and how easy would it be to replace (given the door wont open)

If it restored itself and broke again and you can feel the latch working could it be the locking mechanism? Maybe try firing the lock repeatedly and see if any joy. Is there a mechanical lock in the door which you could stick a key in?

If not, have a look for some online instructions of how to remove the door panel, see how feasible it is to gain some sort of access through a gap with the door closed and see whats going on enough to get in and hopefully pop the door open.

I had all sorts of fun with an X5 after the door handle carrier broke, (which then happened with two other doors!) but the doors could still be opened from the interior handle. The handle carrier broke on my E46 too. German engineering at its best...

Thanks for your reply

I think the mechanical lock is only on the driver door but i will check

Both unlocking the door with the key and pulling the interior door handle makes the latch pop up (indicating the door is unlocked) but pulling the handle (both inside and outside) doesnt then do anything

Sounds like you need an actuator - I replaced mine a few months ago, similar issue.

I bought a used unit of ebay for around £20 - fitting isn't difficult if you are handy with the tools.

Hi, same thing just happened to my 2020 1 series. Is this a common fault? How did you manage to fix it without been able to open the door?

Probably a dodgy microswitch in the lock.

Ive currently got the same problem on our 1 series f40.

Was there a way to open the door if the actuator isnt working?

Ive got the door card off but cannot see anyway to unlock it.

.
But surely, if the button on the door pops up, the actuator is working.

More likely to be something loose at the actual mechanical parts behind the door handle that operates the mechanical lock itself.
