Advice - paint bubbling
Discussion
My 355 is suffering from slight paint bubbling where the roof meets the rear wing ( common problem ). Anyone know exactly what causes this as you seem to get various explanations from dealers. Is it rust ? If so do you think it should be done FOC under the anti-corrosion warranty ( which I think is 6 years ).

Hi Frostie,
Its likely to be the silicon (I think its silicon, or some kind of glue stuff anyway! ) used to keep it all together. It just seems to seep through. I don't think it can be repaired on warranty. Its actually one of the reasons I bought the spider, as it doesn't seem to have this problem. You can try to see what you can get from them. If enough people complain.... I'll check and come back with some details regarding costs etc.

Oh, I was told that the buttresses have common problem with the filler that they used. IS there ever a straight answer with Ferraris? If its rust and they'll pay for it, all the better then eh?
Good for you, at least they are not running away from their responsibilities. You've had it a while now, haven't you?

I think they don't like admitting its rust ! Ferrari's rust - No Sir definitely not !
What I was told is that when then join the wing and roof they put filler in as you say, but then put the anti-rust coating afterwards. Hence the areas where there is filler don't take the coating and are effectively unprotected so over time will rust.

I've got this on my '99 355 as well. I bought the car from maranellos, but a mate of mine who used to drive for Macari's in Wandsworth says this happens to ALL 355's. He reckons its just the join of two parts. Can't see it myself, but he says its very common.

Yup happens to all of them but it is rust caused by a flaw in the build process if the explanation I was given was correct. I have heard many so still not 100% convinced. Trouble is if you have this and try to trade-in they instantly knock at least 2k off the price. Be interesting to see what Ferrari ( the factory ) end up doing about mine.

aaah Rorytiger....I see you're here! Welcome to Pistonheads mate - where we do minimal work all day whilst talking endlessly about the cars we love.
BTW guys - apparently this bubbling thing doesn't happen with the 360 but manifest itself with discolouring of the paint (fading) in the same position.

How do you come to this conclusion Manu? The roof, screen pillars and both flanks of the Modena looks like they're a single piece- are you saying it is in fact two or more pieces bonded together? I'd heard of the paint fading near the oil cooler, just because of the heat (and the bodywork around the engine does get damn hot!)
