2023 118d or 118i?
Discussion
Looking to buy a year old 118d for my wife for her daily. She has a 40 minute commute morning and evening and I feel the diesel would be more frugal and potentially suit the car better with more torque than the 118i. We know the 1.5 petrol engine well as her current mini which she’s owned for 8 years has it. The engine performs well in the mini but I wouldn’t call it particularly economical.
Sounds a bit borderline to me on whether an 18 miles in 40’ commute allows the Diesel Particulate Filter to get hot enough for long enough to burn off deposits.
A rule of thumb that’s often mentioned is ‘15 minutes at 40mph’: if that was done on at least some of the commutes, or if it was done on other trips around once a week, then you’d be fine. Otherwise you’d be better off with a petrol.
