M240i vs 440i - What do you go for?
Discussion
I've been hunting for an F32 440i with a budget of circa £25k, while also turning my eyes sideways towards the F22 M240i. My opinion is that the M240i isn't sufficiently cheaper than a 440i to justify its relative shortcomings. Off the top of my head...
440i - larger / M240i - smaller.
440i - sleek, flowing lines / M240i - a little tubby looking.
440i - heated seats standard / M240i - heated seats difficult to find.
440i - heated steering wheel on some examples / M240i - no heated steering wheel.
440i - larger iDrive screen standard / M240i - larger iDrive screen hard to find.
440i - HK audio on most examples / M240i - HK audio hard to find.
440i - rear armrest with integral cupholders standard / M240i - no rear armrest.
440i - reversing cam on most examples / M240i - reversing cam hard to find.
440i - surround view cam on some examples / M240i - no surround view cam.
To me, if you could get a 440i for £25k then an M240i of comparable age, mileage and spec should be £20k, but they're just not that much cheaper.
The main redeeming feature of the M240i is that having the same engine as the 440i in a smaller package means it's a bit of a pocket rocket. A little faster and potentially more agile, which might be what you prefer.
With a fixed budget of £20k you'll probably get a 440i that's far better equipped while not a great deal older or with a great deal more mileage on it. To me the 440i looks like far better value, but it really does depend on what you want. The way some poeple like to drive will be far better served by the M240i.
