330i M54 Tip in Rattle
Discussion
I'm at a bit of a loss to the cause of a rattle when tipping in to the throttle. It only happens just after applying throttle to pull away at ~1000rpm and clears soon after that.
I've had a listen and it sounds like it's coming from the centre of the cam cover around cylinders 3/4. It could just be reverberating in the cam cover and be a misdirection to the true source but I can't for the life of me work out what i'm dealing with here.
From what I can tell VANOS rattle is at higher rpms and sounds subtly different. This is very much like when you grind the gears in a manual.
Any ideas or experience of similar would be great to hear

Hi,
No direct experience as I have an N53 so this a guess, but are your aux belt pullies ok?
On my motorbike a ticking sound is usually a leak at the manifold, but this would follow revs and wouldn't go away.
Most heat shields are near the middle of back, but they can be a suspect for light rattles.
Finally, have you done any work to he car recently? Retracing steps can sometimes helpmfine loose things.

In case anyone stumbles across this issue in future, the answer to the rattle at around 1000rpm only was a loose heat shield on the engine mount where the rivet had sheared off causing the shield vibrate in only in a specific circumstance.

Fair, I think I have some of this going on!HTH
