I've always thought they were pretty cool. Thinking of one as a spare car, it'd live outside and have occasional, mainly winter use.
If I get a goodun, will it be a decent choice?

I have 1998 3 door Rav auto its a great old banger , Good old fashioned built to last Toyota engineering . Mine is still on the original exhaust. Finding a good one now may be tough though , rust and general off road abuse are main things to look out for. Manuals did have a problem with jumping out of 4 gear I believe .

Great little cars and look even better with one size larger all terrain tyres. They have a proper locking centre diff too.
They can jump out of 5th gear, and rust. The worst will be; on the body at the front where the sub frame bolts to, the rear end of the sills/rear arches, and the trailing arm mounting area under the rear by the sills.

Thanks, sounds ideal, good info.

An auto would be fine, but okay with a manual too

As much as I look the rugged tonka toy looks, a 5 door is the only viable option.
