I've had a few JDM cars now, and having had some cheap bluetooth ones that either didn't work or weren't reliable, i bought a Vgate iCar Pro bluetooth OBD2 (was around £20 off ebay), and use it with Torque pro (couple of ££ on google play).
Has no problems communicating with my early 2000s Toyota, a friend's nissan cube, or my Subaru. You just need to set up the vehicle profile in Torque properly, which can be a faff, but once done you're away.

That's really helpful, thanks for that. I've had the code read by a professional now but this is great info for the future and if it doesn't work than at least it's not too expensive!Has no problems communicating with my early 2000s Toyota, a friend's nissan cube, or my Subaru.
