A mother faces jail after killing the family cat by putting it in the washing machine.
After dumping the cat's body in her wheelie bin, Holly Thacker, 34, told her husband what she had done - in front of two of her horrified daughters.
The cat, named Fluffy, took between five and 10 minutes to die and broke all her claws as the drum rotated, Norwich magistrates heard on Tuesday.
Following the case RSPCA inspector, Rob Melloy said: “I have been in this job for seven years and this is the most horrific, deliberate act of cruelty I have ever had to deal with.”
Thacker, of Brightwell Road, Hellesdon, near Norwich, denied cruelty, but was found guilty and the case adjourned for a pre-sentence report.
Chairman Douglas Bird told her: “We have looked at this very serious offence and consider it is so serious you may go to prison.”
And prosecutor Jonathan Eales told the court: “In all the time I have been prosecuting this is one of the nastiest cases I have dealt with.”
In a statement read to the court vet Mark Bestbier said the cat's terror as she drowned was revealed by the broken claws on all four feet.
“The disorientation associated with a rotating drum and the filling with water would have been a slow and terrifying process,” he said.
“The drowning of a young, apparently healthy cat is unusual, unless placed in a confined place or deliberate.”
He said the reddish colour of the dead animal's skin showed the water she drowned in was warm.
“In my opinion the cat would have suffered prior to its death which would have taken approximately five to 10 minutes.”
Thacker said she would never harm an animal and denied killing the cat or putting it into the washing machine.
She said she took Fluffy and her two kittens in after a neighbour had said she was going to kill them.
Thacker said she found homes for the kittens, but Fluffy became “weird and a bit vicious” and started living outside.
She claimed her ex-husband Simon Thacker, who gave evidence against her, might have killed the cat.
Mr Thacker of Markham Tower, Mile Cross, was taken to court by police after initially failing to attend to give evidence.
He said that when he went to her home on Sunday, November 7 last year she told him, in front of her daughters, then aged 15 and five, that she had put the cat into the washing machine.
She said the cat had been vicious, clawing and scratching her.
At first he did not believe her, thinking she was joking, but she showed him the body, which was in a plastic bag in her wheelie bin.
“The cat was dead and soaking wet. She said it was a boiling wash. I told her that was disgusting and cruel and went home.”
Questioned by Thacker's barrister Audrey Archer, he agreed they did not get on and she had obtained an injunction against him. He denied making up the story or lying.[/quote]
