Morning all,

Just got this as our family bus / work hack for me.

I mentioned it on the Ordinary Estates thread and someone mentioned that they would be interested in my thoughts, so here they are.

It’s a pretty standard straightforward piece of kit, really, with a couple of unique features. The main one is the steering wheel/dash setup which has a smaller wheel and the instruments above it. I like it, and wasn’t sure if I would! The ergonomics work well but the lower wheel makes egress a little trickier.

Space wise, think of it as an Octavia in the boot (massive) but an Astra in the back seat (average).

It’s set up for comfort and rides really well. I haven’t tossed it round any country lanes yet but it seems to corner well (I’m no expert). It’s on 205/55 R16 all season tyres. No worries in the ice and snow.

Not really a looker, is it?

Anyway it has the 1.5 four pot diesel, 130PS. Economy is excellent, I’ve just done Frankfurt to Calais at 74mpg (100km/h average, some sticky traffic). 6th is geared to about 2100rpm at 120kmh/70mph. It’s pretty smooth and quiet at speed.

These are decent value second hand. Mine was priced considerably cheaper than the equivalent Golf or Octavia estate, at 2 years old/40,000km it was €17k. Bear in mind that used cars are more expensive in Germany. The buying process from a smaller family-owned garage was extremely pleasant, the re-registration less so but that’s always a ball ache over here.

I suppose the main question will be how reliable it proves to be over the next few years; only time will tell.

I would recommend having a look at them if you’re in the market for this kind of thing.

Any questions just ask.

18 months in and it’s proved reliable. Now on 67,000 km and it has just had its second oil change in my ownership.

Quick note to add: the recommended oil for the 1.5hdi is now Total Quartz 5w30 RCP. This is the latest change, it’s gone from 0w30 to 0w20, now 5w30 RCP.

I use this for long distance stuff. We have an MG4 electric for local trips. It averages 4l/100km (70 mpg) but I don’t thrash it, commonly 65-70 mph. It’s not massively refined at speed, you know it’s a diesel, but it does ride beautifully.

Two minor issues. In the winter the driver’s side mirror doesn’t want to fold. The infotainment system also likes to randomly reboot, which is annoying, but it hasn’t done it for a few months.

The car is softly sprung at the rear which is great for comfort but not so good when we have either weight in the back or bikes on a rear carrier. There are two options: poly inserts between the spring coils or supplemental springs that sit inside the existing ones. I am not sure which to go for, there are implications with TüV here and insurance.
