Hello, having been out of the porsche fold a few years now, im maybe tempted back by a gt3 again (mostly for track work), either a 991.2gt3 or a 991.1gt3 rs, ive read about the problems with the engine in the 999.1gt3 but did the rs suffer from the same issues? I see one advertised at the minute with a replacement engine and ive put 2 & 2 together and maybe got 5.

Gen 1 RS still susceptible to similar extent as the architecture and design is the same.

.2 were heavily re-worked and moved to a rigid valvetrain, disposing of the hydraulically actuated finger followers.

Some of the engines have fewer vulnerabilities than others but there have been cases of failures on ALL generations for various reasons including and up 992 GT3, suffered oil tank leaks, oil sump leaks and sudden losses of power… some cases requiring brand new engines.

Main thing is to buy a car that has Porsche warranty and you’ll be covered.

The 991.1 RS engine also had DLC on the cams as well as improved quality control on the integrity and coating of the followers, as the later G series replacement 3.8l engines in the .1 GT3.

The .1 RS and .1 G series GT3 engines were also re-worked with revised Cam oil feed systems, but the .2 GT3 is a much re-worked engine and doesn't suffer the same likelihood of engine issues, especially with lots of track work.

If you can afford it get a .2 GT3 for added peace of mind, but keep the Porsche warranty active on whatever you go for.

(Friend of mine just bought a beautiful .2 GT3 with Clubsport, lift, PCCB, carbon and leather etc for £124k, bargain!)

You could spend hours researching the topic. Apparently the G6 engine has the same probability of failure as the .2 engine, but the internet is now saturated with the issues so it’s going to hard to reassure people. I guess many will be happier to go with the .2 if they can. Early .1s are almost a 10 year old car now. Amazing how time flies
