Hi all,

I have a G21 330d xdrive that has just hit 70k miles, I’m considering renewing the gearbox oil but I’m aware BMW claim the ZF gearbox is sealed for life. I presently have the BMW extended warranty, which I’m conscious may be invalidated by a gearbox oil service, hence I’m curious if anyone can offer insight as to whether there will be physical or OBD/C evidence of the gearbox service??

Thanks in advance.

Only physical clues really; but if you use a ZF recommended garage then I'd hope that'd keep you in the good books...

When does your warranty run out?

Why not ask the warranty provider? Provide evidence that ZF recommend the change, and ask them. If done by a ZF-approved workshop/agent, I don’t see how it would invalidate it, or why they would/could object.

Thanks all - I would use a ZF approved service centre, fortunately I have a couple in my area, I’ll consult them prior if I proceed.

Warranty is the BMW extended warranty which I have on a rolling monthly basis, operated by a third party I believe, but under BMWs specified terms. Hence my presumption it would follow BMWs service spec, sealed for life, if warranty claim arises.

I’ll make enquiries with BMW warranty one of hot eZF service centres.

If there is nothing wrong with it and you have a warranty leave it alone and save yourself some money, if there was an issue then the warranty is there to fix it so why would you try to fix something that isn't broken and risk the warranty you have.

If you want to fiddle with it then wait until you have no warranty then you can change the oil as often as you like.

If the service is done with gen. BMW parts by a competent mechanic there will be no trace visual or diagnostic of it being done. ZF parts also look identical to gen. ones apart from maybe a missing sticker with a BMW part No.

I got the ZF service kit from Autodoc an got a ZF gearbox specialist to complete the service - cost about £150 to do the service with my parts.. quite intricate getting right temperature and filling etc..
Did my M140i at about 70,000miles; 330d drive (G20) going to be done shortly..
Worth doing in my view - ZF make the box and recommend doing it..
