Sir Ron Dennis
Discussion
I am not an avid supporter of these gongs. Most seem to be awarded to the detritus of modern society. Shelley(?) might have said 'all titles are tinsel', and if he didn't, he should have. I'm not surprising anyone on here when I admit to being a big fan of Dennis. I followed McLaren since the start of MP4. Through the occasional thick and multiple thins and I reckon it's about time he got a knighthood. But:
He has given £300,000 to the tories. Sort of ruins it as an award of merit.
Ban the whole damned awards system. It's nonsense. It's insulting. So many shady characters making the award of a knighthood something of passing interest.
I'm glad for him as it's obviously something he wanted. I just can't think why.

He deserves it and good on him for getting it. I know we’ve been lucky enough to have the two hour interview but I’m selfish enough to hope he thinks this might be a nice final chapter and we get the full autobiography now.
Agree with this 100%. He may not be everyone's cup of tea but his achievements as a team boss and raising Mclaren to where it is now deserve full recognition.Just a shame it has to be announced on the same day as Liz Truss' joke honours list which has devalued the idea of these rewards even further. And quite why the BBC doesn't seem to be mentioning Ron is very odd.
A well-deserved honour. I do hope that he is enjoying retirement.
I always thought that Ron and Martin W made a strong team. It has taken the current team a long time to recover to any sort of form and the car company is effectively lost.
From humble beginnings, I think Ron was a man of great vision. Its just that the world around him changed and he could not accept that. The knighthood was overdue.

Ron has been right at the forefront of change most of his life and still is with his consultancy work and nonexec director roles.
He lost the fight to retain control of the McLaren group and had to move on, instead of calling it a day and chilling with his millions, he invested in new areas that made a difference to people and supported future development. He is the oposite of stuck in his ways.

BBC is shocking for any coverage of motorsport related news these days. Just look at the article they have on Button "returning" to racing. They say he has done a handful of guest appearances since retiring from F1. Did I imagine two full seasons, including the title, in Super GT?
Not sure the BBC has any motorsport interest beyond F1 and W Series, and they probably don’t realise that WS got cancelled! Congratulations to Sir Ron, a well deserved reward for a long career. As others have said, this one is as much for what he’s done since leaving McLaren, as a government trade envoy and involved with various charities.
All political parties receive donations from wealthy business people. Labour have been raking it in lately, now they have dumped the Marxist leader.

Ron gave them peanuts by comparison, quite a tight arse really.

Didnt Labour take £1m from Bernie E? (Though I think it was returned)https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/07/l...

My guess is the BBC is light on reporters and the writer of the article read this from the official release:
Ronald DENNIS CBE
Chair, Podium Analytics and Patron,
Tommy's Campaign. For services to Industry and to Charity
(Virginia Water, Surrey)
..and didn't make the connection to F1...
Thats the irony. For all his success in F1, for turning McLaren in 81 with 50 employees into the behemoth it is today with near 1000. For all the money he's pumped into the economy via Motorsport. Its the Charity work and being a business ambassador for the UK that gets him the award he deserved at least 2 decades ago!Ronald DENNIS CBE
Chair, Podium Analytics and Patron,
Tommy's Campaign. For services to Industry and to Charity

..and didn't make the connection to F1...
I'd like to think that even his adversaries acknowledge this award being deserved.
