Long time lurker, limited poster, but hoping for some help...

Need to purchase a car in the next couple of weeks, but struggling to settle on anything, so ideas, thoughts and recommendations welcomed.

Needs to be dog friendly, ~£20k budget. To do about 6k miles a year.

We have a Merc Gla and Z4, but want to add something bigger to the fold. What you would you buy??

(I've had Lotus, Aston's, Range Rovers and Defender before so enjoy a car with character)

It’s worth knowing what your preference is regarding age if the car, what your definition of fast is, attitude to potential for big bills or expensive consumables ?

Good suggestions so far, thank you.

I'm not particular on age, doesn't have to be new/recent but will need to be reliable. Also not too scared of big bills, Range Rover / Discos have exposed me to that before! And it kind of comes with the territory to some extent as things get more complex/bigger.

Indeed 'fast' is subjective... And is more about feel. I've usually searched sub8sec on auto trader. Given my limited mileage I've been mostly looking at Petrol and anything reasonably big engine wise, would typically be reasonably fast.

Golf R estate or the lesser spotted Seat Leon Cupra equivalent.

I was going to suggest some sort of jag, but those S6s mentioned above seem ideal tbh.

Hard to look past the c63/e63/cls63 shooting brake with those requirements.

Oh how I wish I only did 6k a year rather than about 3 times that!

I’m looking for similar and the c43 and Audi b9 s4 avants are strong contenders. I need 4wd for the daily.

Look at the S6 Avant as imo they're actually better value than the S4/C43.

Also following with interest. Only complication for my needs due to being a bit rural is for occasional 4x4 capability.

340i Touring?

Brilliant engine, and less brave pills required than 80k+ mile V8 Mercs.

Thanks just checked AT and 2018 S6 are closer to 30k though? Looks like in 19 they changed to a v6 diesel. The 2018 s4 avants are early 20s similar to c43 so the s6 for similar year and spec seems a lot more?

I'd say test drive one although you'll get an older S6 they're an overall better car especially spec wise, but I agree they're harder to find vs the S4:

B8 RS4’s are now within budget, cheaper options out there with higher miles too!
