Look up engine number using reg?

Does anyone know a way of looking up an engine number using a reg? (Ideally free)

I’m trying to find a donor car for a project. I’m specifically trying to find a BMW N52 motor and they featured in some of the earlier E9x 3 series and I want to check cars on adverts without pestering the sellers.

No problem, it used to give you the vin bug j think they stopped it as too many people used it, it may still do it ic you dig through the code using a proper web browser
