BMW X5 M50d F15 Used Reliability

Dear All

I'm looking to replace my BMW 640d M Sport (2017) which is fully loaded for a BMW X5 M50d. I have always looked after my cars with Main dealer or specialist servicing, premium tyres, premium diesel etc. The spec that I want is either black or white with black leather, HUD, HK, Adaptive lights (the latter not a deal breaker), with the 468M Alloys, looking to spend up to 30K and looking at between 16-18 Reg here in the UK with up to 60-70k mileage.

looking to go down the used approved route (warranty) or even from a dealer if its in excellent condition, Im looking to have it as my daily commute 76 miles round trip mainly motorway doing about 70-80 mph.

What are main things to look out for these types of cars in terms of reliability ?

1 Any issues with the turbos, Injectors, EGR, DPF etc

2 Any suspension issues to be weary about

3 Any electrical issues that these cars suffer from

5 What sort of miles do you get on a full tank

6 What sort of average MPG

Any help or advice from anyone who has owned this vehicle appreciated.

Had a 67 plate m50d for about a year and really didn’t like it. Mpg was not good - sub 20 at times if traffic was heavy. Plus I worried it would be useless in the snow (which we do get up here) with stupidly fat tyres. Sounds like rear suspension air bags are quite prone to failure. I’m just not a fan of SUVs tbh.

For reference we had a 62 plate 640d for 2.5 years and did 55k miles and thought it was fantastic. Didn’t even get through a set of brake pads. 42mpg longterm and coped fine in the snow with winter tyres. One of the best cars we’ve had.

Rear airbags and mpg would be poor.
Best of bunch (mine) 40D 30-40 mpg.
Had it for 5 years, poor on tyres.

Interested in the 640d if you come to sell, although looking to get one before end of Jan!

Loved ours. Had a 2015 model and owned it used from 40,000km on the clock up to 100,000km when I got rid of it.

No big issues to report, although it was getting to that age where it was needing a lot of wear and tear items replaced which is understandable with a 2.5t SUV with reasonably impressive performance.

Rear air suspension struts leak and tend to need replacing at 70-90k miles. Rear air suspension pump liable to fail also

Eats tyres

Quite thirsty. Our 40d averages 32mpg mixed driving, mainly rural

Consider a full gearbox service by a ZF specialist

Other than that, it’s a big, fast, comfortable cruiser. Will carry masses of luggage, people, dogs etc in comfort across countries

Also has a 2015 40d for 70,000m. Averaged 29mpg and the same air suspension issues others have mentioned and certainly chewed through tyres. On the whole it was a great car although I got rid when I got fed up chasing a vibration under the seat that wasn’t any of the usual suspects.

Turbos prone to failure, but not much moreso than on any diesel engine. Timing chains also give issues and big end bearings over 120k miles

2 Any suspension issues to be weary about
Not really. Air springs can fail but very cheap and very easy to replace. Same with the compressor itself.

3 Any electrical issues that these cars suffer from
Haven't personally seen much


6 What sort of average MPG
My M50d sat from 26-30mpg depending on driving


Check for a judder while accelerating. This is usually the transfer case, sometimes an oil change will cure it, otherwise it will need rebuilt.

The 640d is such a brilliant car and hard to replace, ive always fancied a 4x4 though.

I have looked at the Range Rover Sport 15-17 reg with about 50k they are going for about 22-26k at the moment. But the insurance on them is ridiculous, they get stolen, and not reliable from what i read and expensive to repair so thats not an option now although bloody tempting.

With the X5 Im not to bothered by the extra fuel cost, insurance, maintenance etc, but from what you guys have said about chewing through tyres will annoy me with miles i do. Food for thought !

They are generally reliable. X5s are big and heavy so will always be hard on tyres on brakes. Suspension too as they age.
