My S1 111s is 6 yrs old with 37.5k miles and has developed a whining noise from the rear :( and I'm not sure if this is the drive train, the gearbox or the wheel bearings.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

If it is speed related rather than revs then wheel bearing is likely culprit. You can check this easily enough by jacking the car with handbrake off and in neutral, spin the wheel by hand, if this is accompanied by a grinding noise the wheel bearing is on the way out. Mine is in the local specialists' today for a new bearing, it was so bad I could barely hear Hurricane and EliseParts exhaust over the racket!

Was driving in France with Stu Cartwright last year and his car developed a loud whining and was trailered back home. Turned out it was a knackered cat, which surprised us all.

Should be easy enough to rule out the gearbox - when you hear the noise whilst driving, pop it into neutral whilst still moving. If the sound is still there then it's not the gearbox. My gearbox is rather noisy in 4th/5th but this is fairly common on the car.

When I got my car I noticed that when I drove it I got a whining noise in my left ear.

So I dumped the bitch.

Nononono...you were driving it wrong. They only whine at low revs. If you keep the engine in the powerband, it's more of a scream.

Still, you chose the right solution. Unlike me, who made teh mistake of changing the car.
