Hi I have a BMW 420d coupe 2 door
It has two seats in the back but a good space in the middle of the two seats and my questions is it can I convert it to 3 seats?

Pretty confident that the answer is “no”. There’s no place to anchor a seatbelt, the car hasn’t been type approved for 3 rear passengers, etc.

I’ve got a 440i and I wouldn’t want to put anyone in the space between the rear seats, they’d have to be thin as a rake and short (due to the hump between the seats).

This. Unless it has seat belt anchorages, and the relevant accompanying sheet metal reinforcement, don’t even think about it.

The four-door F36 Gran Coupé has a centre seat belt in the rear. Slight change of car perhaps? There's still a hump but it doesn't have the plastic tray built in that the F32 two-door version has so, while not ideal, it will take someone.
