Is the answer an Outback?

Due to my increasing need to drive down muddy lanes and potentially on the lanes of Salisbury plain as my main hobby is a wildlife photographer.
I probably need to change my car, currently a 340D touring.
The problem is, I don't want to touch Land Rover due to nickability and reliability.
Other SUV's probably won't be adequate enough I guess, was looking at RAV4 but they are now the most nicked car in Europe! (acc to Autogefuhl)
I just wish Subaru would of put the turbo engine in the Outback as the 2.5 lump has no go and likes bit of a drink.
It would also be able to fit a MTB in the boot, so a Duster probably is too small and also too low rent.

I have a Gen 6 Outback and I love it. All the roadtests are valid, the engine, the cvt, the fuel economy blah blah.
However, in a year it has been impeccably reliable, no faults and no recalls. I've only been back to the dealer for a cheap 12k service.
It is safe, comfy, practical, vast, unstoppable in snow and mild off road. It is a lovely place to be for long and short journeys and I can have a smidgen of fun on a mountain road (but it is not what it is for). The hill descent works and the x mode and permanent AWD fantastic. I grumbled that the summer OEM tyres were s
te in the winter so bought some Winters and it is perfect now the ice and snow are here.
Soooooo good. But it is not everyone's cup of tea - in fact no one else buys them so it is very unique, which adds to the charm!

The Outback ticks all our boxes as bike transport, big wide opening, huge flat load space so easy to get the bike and dog in the back.
Our 2018 Outback is a big step forward interior wise compared to the Legacy it replaced. Ours has done 78k miles with only routine maintenance that you would expect and gets about 35mpg on most trips (does very little urban trips around town).

Wow - a compliment on Pistonheads, I'm in shock! Thanks!TBH, wife originally hated the colour from photos and called it excrement khaki but was happier when she saw it in the flesh. After a year and lots of family trips she prefers it to the other, muted options.
Suits the subtle, non shouty image. Very much slim public servant as opposed to powerfully built company director (but I have used that line before....)

I've always had fast estates and I don't know if I could live with a slooooow one, as like the overtaking ability.
As far as the Volvo, no thanks, the lack of buttons in the 340D drives me mad.
For salisbury plain, you do need a bit of ground clearance as mates have ripped off their sump in normal cars...
