2024 UK Targa/Road Rallying Thread

Basingstoke Motor club will be holding navigator training sessions and practice 12-Cars in January and February.
Training will be on the 1st Wednesday of the months, with the actual events on the 3rd Wednesday.
12-Car rallies are navigational events where the navigator and driver work as a team to plot and drive the route in the correct time limit.
Any car can be used as long as it has plain bodywork (no stickers / advertising etc).
Insurance for the event can be arranged for a small fee.
The events will be around 30 miles long (60 minutes). An ideal length to get around and back to the start venue for debrief and drinks etc.
They will be open to anyone who wishes to come along. They can supply drivers and pottis etc.
Both will be on OS map 185 (Dash4it are sensibly priced)

The 2024 Blue Book has just been published, one key change is the establishment of separate technical regs for Targa rallies. A lot are still in alignment with road rallies. But one positive change for 2024 is the ability to now use turbo diesel up to 2.0 litre capacity. There are lots and lots of newly eligible cars which may enhance the entry levels.

Interesting. That could open up possibilities, but despite my Skoda vRS now having a sumpguard it is definitely not for doing targas in.Autosport piece about doing a clubman 12-Car rally.

Supplementary Regulations for The Festival Targa Rally are now available on the Bath Motor Club web site. Entries will open at 20:00 on 14th January. The link to the entry form is on the Bath Motor Club web site.
The event is on the 24th February and starts and finishes at Castle Combe race circuit.

I was as a navigator
Was a great event, 12 cars, lots of marshals
All got around.
Picked up a puncture on 1st section which dropped us back and I made a few mistakes that cost us.
Looking forward to the next events. Is a very busy calendar.

This is a multi level event suitable for all classes of vehicles and competitors. Further details will be available shortly but in the meantime book the date in your diaries please.👍
First 12 Car of the year for me last night.
A brilliantly run event by Toby and Andy of Sevenoaks and District Motor Club, their first as organisers.
Car troubles meant it wasn't great for us, first of all the power supply to the Poti (illuminated map magnifier) failed making plotting and navigation very hard for Chas the navigator, then the exhaust hangers disintegrated, necessitating a long halt to repair. This meant we had to cut a couple of sections to get to the final control before OTL, hence a barrowload of penalties. Still, we got a finish and weren't last! Onwards and Upwards!
A brilliantly run event by Toby and Andy of Sevenoaks and District Motor Club, their first as organisers.
Car troubles meant it wasn't great for us, first of all the power supply to the Poti (illuminated map magnifier) failed making plotting and navigation very hard for Chas the navigator, then the exhaust hangers disintegrated, necessitating a long halt to repair. This meant we had to cut a couple of sections to get to the final control before OTL, hence a barrowload of penalties. Still, we got a finish and weren't last! Onwards and Upwards!

Yesterday, I also undertook a site survey at Manston Airport for this - a huge huge site with lots of suitable test mileage. What struck me was the huge variety of surfaces - even just on the concrete / tarmac sections there must be about 10 different levels of grip. Now we have to refine our thoughts into a set of interesting, challenging but also safe and compliant test routes. Looking forwards to the Manston Targa.
Is a busy time for me, more events that I want to do than can.
However, Bath Festival is booked (Nav) and Bramley (Nav & Drive) as well as the Oxford 20/20 and sundry 12 cars.
First event marshalling will be the JJ Brown this weekend, then off up to the Hexham/John Robson in Feb.
The weekend after the Hexham I've a choice of either the RoD, Moonbeam or the Valentine, all relatively close to each other but our club
is running a stage event at Weston on the Sun and gone are the days me managing on a couple of hours sleep,
The weekend of the 24th Feb sees our club running a Targa at Dishforth, so I'll be there doing something.
After that I've no idea what I'll be up to so will just see how it goes,

Ilkley and district 12 Car tonight, my first outing of 24, out with my Brother in the Corsa. 63 miles, which is quite long for a 12 Car, almost on the limit for the time available.
Good to see lots of 12 cars happening. Such a fun few hours for no money (if you don’t break anything).
Started my year with the last ever Bagger. Nearly a 250 mile route in the end! Had my best run as a nav after a couple of years of frustration. Found some good flow and finished 2nd in the novice class and 22nd overall out of 70 starters. Fog, ice, mud, gravel, it had it all. Still annoyed I missed one of the final control a which cost is 1st in class by about 4 minutes.
Did a 12 car the following Friday but tapped out and retreated to the pub about half way round as the car wasn’t right after the punishment on the Bagger.
Taunton Rally this weekend which starts and finishes about 10 minutes from home. Got caught up in a stoppage by an overzealous policeman after a mile last year so hoping for a better run this year and to add to our decent start to the South West championship.
Then it’s Bath Festival after that which I am really looking forward to.

Defo get the feeling Targas have peaked and will be interesting to see how things change. Hopefully not too drastically. Needs the old endurance regs dusting off.
