I’m thinking of changing my B9.5 A4 TFSI for an M340i and looking for some owners thoughts on the car.

I understand the B58 can actually be quite good on fuel on a long run but what should I expect as real world figures? We do approx 600 miles a month and that consists of mainly town driving and the occasional long run. I use to own an N55 powered M135i a few years ago but it wasn’t used as a daily the M340i would be used by my wife most days. I

Any other potential things to look out for with one?

Cracking cars, but sadly I will be selling mine in the new year. Not heard of specific issuss with the, yet, and mine is still in warranty so this would cover anything.

As for mpg. Well, on a run from derby to tunbridge wells, light traffic, doing the speed limit. on eco mode..

With the 340d you d get even more, obviously

48mpg is amazing clap I regularly see over 40 on my commute in my G21, high 30s on average is a realistic estimate. Obviously this can plummet with a heavy right foot. MHT versions gain a few mpg. Are you buying new or used? There are pros and cons to both LCI and pre LCI. LCI started appearing in the summer of last year.

It wouldn’t be new no. Would probably be a 2/3 year old car. Just trying to weigh up the pros and cons of owning one. It’s a car I’ve always fancied though as they seem to tick all the boxes. We have a 2 year old child so the boot size should be equal to the A4.

I had an F generation M240i and I’d get just under 30mpg on average, mainly town driving and a short motorway stint on my commute, mine was a manual so I imagine an Auto would be a little better.

The B58 Is a brilliant engine. Loved mine, had it 3 years

figures like this making me regret getting the 640d.

long term average is 38mpg. maybe 2% of driving is giving it some. 500/550 miles per tank with 60 / 70% motorway

That's all in Comfort mode. I need to try Eco Pro...

The 41.3 MPG trip was 55 miles of motorway driving. The other 138 trips were an average of 20 mins each.

Ours does high 20's with a lot of town driving, about 32 overall I think, 38-40 on a motorway run in Eco mode. It's a 2019 Touring just before they added the mild hybrid. That's generally on V-Power.

I previously had a 335d and when I did the man maths on getting the M340i over the M340d it didn't come out much different with our mileage (10k pa). Lots of short local journeys by Mrs S3 meant petrol was a better long term bet.

Yeah thought about 335ds along with the new S4 (diesel also) but don’t think we would get the benefits from running a diesel as it will be mainly town driving.

That’s interesting, didn’t realise M340i touring production started in 2019, for some reason I always thought it was 2020.
Registered December so it must be one of the first.

Picked up my brand new G21 M340i yesterday... low to mid 30’s looks easily achievable and this was a big driver to stay petrol after my 21 vRS petrol manual estate which always managed 31mpg on 15k pa... but the beast is so sublime to drive I don’t actually care about economy now!

Same engine in a BMW X3 M40i - Long term average is 28.8mpg over 43k miles, best 42.5mpg on a trip Loughborough to Bristol. You'll easily get low-mid 30s. I'm not always a parsimonious driver for reference!

I've had one for about 6 months. It replaced an F10 530d.

It is a fantastic car - the biggest surprise has been how efficient it is. My overall average with the car is about 3mpg less than it was with my 530d. It will routinely return 40mpg over a tank if I am doing longer distances - I drove it 400 miles home when I collected it, all Motorway, and it averaged 48mpg.

The lifetime average on the car from new - it has about 20k on it now - is 35. Mine is the later version with the mild hybrid system (The first year of production didn't have this)

After I swapped the tyres for Michelin Pilot Sport 4S I'm happy with the ride quality as well - it's an ideal balance of comfort and handling.

I've had the MHT one for a few months. Brilliant car but not getting anywhere near the mpg you all have been getting sadly. Most of the journeys have been local so that might be one of the reasons.

So last couple of months:

October total trips 78 and total distance 530 miles (about 250 miles motorway/dual carriageway)
27 mpg

November total trips 71 and total distance 222 miles
20.4 mpg

December total trips 19 and total distance 58 miles
19.6

Filled up the tank nearly 2 weeks ago around £80. I've done about 140 miles and its showing about 120 miles, which is not great.
I hardly put my foot down and most of the time its in comfort.

19 trips doing 58 miles, they are super short trips then, that'll be hammering the average.

Can't speak from experience on this engine directly but just having taken delivery of a Disco 5 which has MHEV technology, there is a very, very noticeable difference between fuel economy during the short (cold) nursery runs to when you eek out a lengthier journey when the engine is already warm.

I recognise they're very different cars, but I will get 19mpg on a short 5mile trip to nursery and then 24mpg on return journey. But if I then do another 20miles on top (which is often the case if dropping 3yr old then 11yr old at school), I can then easily get 35mpg+ on the next leg of the journey.

To get more of an idea of whether you have an issue with the car or it's just the characteristics of your usage, I'd get the oil nicely warm, reset the trip computer and then go for a very varied drive of 20-30miles and see what the fuel economy spits out.

There is a user on BMWLand who regularly gets well into the high 30's/low 40s with his 440i MHT over longer journeys. I'd expect yours to do so easily if given a chance.

Your usage above indicates your average journey length of 3-6miles per journey. That will hammer fuel economy regardless of the way you drive.

I had a F31 340i Touring (with MPPSK) and I'd completely agree on the above figures.

Also managed a few high-40s runs during my time with it. The B58 is a very impressive engine in terms of power & torque, refinement, economy and reliability.

I'm currently on my 2nd B58 (540i xDrive and 340i). I tend to get around 27 - 28mpg around the doors with a bit of A road driving. Tend to get mid 30's on a good run. I've never once seen any of my cars start with a 4 though. Top marks to the poster above!
