Its generally agreed that we pay too much tax, and that "our" money is then squandered rather than 'managed' by the government.

What are all the ways in which the government earns tax money from us.

1) Vat from all businesses
2) Corporation tax for businesses on money not spent
3) Income tax on the money we actually earn
4) Tax on the same money we've saved in our banks
(anyone else care to take over, compiling the list)

A much easier (well, shorter) question is what can you do with money that avoids tax?

Are jaffa cakes exempt? I thought they were a luxury food and therefore liable for tax? Or is it biscuits that are liable for tax as a luxury food?

The new 2006 Self Assessment Tax form has been published and is hugely simplified over previous years. It goes as follows:

Form said:

1: How much money did you earn last year?

£ ______. ____

2: Send it to us.

(It's an oldie - I know)

There is a similar thread on this topic from a few months back.

I pointed out a few more of the "hidden" taxes such as Excise Duties which are simply ENORMOUS.

What about "Tonnage Tax" and "North Sea Oli Levies" as well?

VAT on childrens clothes. I know you're not meant to but when your son is 13 and 6'5 tall with size 15 feet, its a fact of life.
Why should one have to pay tax based one's size for Goodness sake??

You're all forgetting the obvious one - tax on tax. Face it, you work and get paid - taxed. You buy something with that pay - taxed. You save it in an account - taxed. Pension - taxed. Insurance - taxed. Home - taxed. Car - taxed.

So basically, you're always working for the government.

One of my clients installs windows and doors for schools. He phoned me the other day, knowing my distaste for Government waste, to say his company has just completed a £100k school contract. The school in question is currently being demolished!

The only way I can keep sane from such stupidity, is that his wages/profits will now be spent by in the local shops. Thus the money rotates. However, he plans to go on one or two nice holidays, so Johnny Foreigner will be getting my hard earned Tax!

Oh well, better that than some work-shy British chav, who gets a buzz from keying my car!

So you have invented a 4 wheeled road legal submarine which runs on Jaffa cakes?
